30 Grain Berger 17 Cal
Apparently these bullets remain highly sought after. I put 1400 of them for sale and they were gone in under ten minutes. Actually had a bidding war break out for them. If they sell that fast here in Canada I cannot for the life of me understand why Berger won't start producing batches of them again. When guys are willing to pay $50/100 there has got to be a good margin in these. Has anyone talked to Berger lately, I know they are under new ownership but the new owners must be interested in making money.

Not too terrible I suppose that Berger is no longer making them now that Chan Nagel is producing the 30 grain .172" again. I just got my two 100 round boxes of them last week and sure am looking forward to trying them out next spring. Especially after all the glowing reports from those that have used them.

I have a couple boxes of the Bergers, haven't shot them still working through a stash of other bullets. Maybe the next barrel.

Chan's 17 caliber bullets are good and he has made good bullets for quite a few years. IIRC, he bought Clint Starke's old 17 caliber dies when Clint went out of business in ~2003-04. However, in the past, Chan has had at least one lapse around 2012-13 where he couldn't acquire bullet jackets. No jackets, no bullets. For individuals making bullets, bullet jackets can sometimes be an elusive catch in today's world, especially in the smaller calibers.
Beger will likely be in business when Chan isn't in the long run. I hate to see any larger manufacturer go out of business or not make something that otherwise might be difficult to get from individuals. We'll all feel it in the long haul. JMO - BCB |
For what it's worth, I called Berger about a run of those 30gr Match BT's.
I have a .17 Tactical load for them at just a titch over 3,900 FPS, great coyote bullet! I'm thinking I'll run outta barrel before I run outta the stock of Bergers I have. I then plan on replacing this barrel with something more barrel life friendly. Besides, at my age and condition I don't see 1400 coyotes in my future so I'll likely run outta me before I run outta components, only the good Lord knows that one I guess so I leave that in his capable hands :). Back to the bullets, I don't remember the required number they wanted to make a run but it was massive and expensive as memory serves! That's a bit back however. It seems like a 100,000 maybe but again with the crummy memory. Since Walt left I'd sure rather have Chan's bullets anyway. |
