Rabbit Hunt
 

Myself and Ian my hunting friend decided that we shout go on a couple days of rabbits shooting. So last Thursday we packed the 4x4 and off we went. Two and a half days later we had seen a grand total of 8 rabbits and 5 of those were on the public road driving to the farm. Two were shot by some other shooters we came across and one we saw while getting fire wood. I did not pull the trigger at all. Although we did get this.

That's a nice young fallow, at least you came home with some meat for the freezer.

We haven't had a good rabbit patch since they released calici virus but I have noticed a lot of small rabbits around the farm lately. Like all viruses it will run it's race and everything will be back to its normal self in the next few years.

How do you like to cook your venison? Stew, sausages, steaks?

Yes it was good to bring home some venison. Ian was the one who shot it being his turn on the rifle while I drove. We were actually looking for rabbits but they are so scarce at the moment I seriously doubt their is enough to have the normal breeding explosion in Spring we normally see on this farm. We did shoot good numbers of rabbits all through the drought but now that it has rained we suspect Calici and Mixo have decimated the rabbits. As you say they will bounce back but it will take awhile.

I have only had back straps given to me which I have used for Steak Sandwiches. This is the first deer where I have been in on the kill so to speak. I have a Hind Quarter and a Back Strap in the fridge setting. I will separate it into the different pieces in a couple days. IE Top side, Bottom round, Corned meat etc. I will have to do a bit of research on the best ways to cook the different pieces.

Well reed1911 you got me on that one. I had to go look it up what the heck a Jackalope was. Now I know. Funny thing is George and I have been emailing back and forth this afternoon as we were discussing the differences on what things are called in the States and Australia.

Nice critter Pete, and I believe that is a Deermaster special knife as well. I have two of his. :D And bought the eldest daughter one of his chef's knives for her 30th birthday.

Well spotted Camel, it sure is a Deermaster special. I have two, that one and the other is about 1/3 the size which makes it perfect for smaller work.
