possible to swage larger bullets into smaller?

I'm curious if it is possible to swage a premade bullet in say 20 caliber down to a 17 caliber? ie. say take a .204 32gr fbhp bullet and make it into a 32gr .172 hpbt?

I know 32gr is on the high side but just using it as an example. I know I've heard of it being done for the .19's but that's a smaller drop in size.

I gather you are talking jacketed projectiles and not cast lead projectiles?

correct. thinking nosler shots (as their cheap) and swaging them down. just your run of the mill cup and core bullet.

I still want to try the 22 case method like you educated me on a few months back.

It might be possible, but not sure how accurate it may be. You would probably need to use 2 or 3 draw dies to do it. If you try to do it in one step the bullet would probably end up distorted and most likely have the core separated from the jacket some. The jacket springs back some and the core doesn't. Draw down, swage up.

I have heard of some doing this with 20 cal down to the 19 cal. You may well be able to go on down to 17, but I would think it would be best to do so with a couple steps with a couple die bodies.
Good idea with the Nosler shots.. they are a decent cup and core bullet for our little critter shoots. Bill K :) Another idea is just buy the 17 20 grain bullets put out by both Midsouth Shooter and MidwayUSA ( varmint nitemare/dogtown ) they are nothing other than the Nosler shot, with their names on them. and already to go. Except they do not come in a heavier weight, which appears to be what you are after.

good info guys. bill k yeah I was thinking a 32gr hpbt would be a interesting little animal out of a fast 17 like the predator or 17-204. definitely getting the cart before the horse though.

I have 2 other 17's planned first and i'll just use off the shelf bullets for them possibly some of the texas golds for the larger of the two.

What do you blokes class as cheap in regards to the cost of projectiles?
Here I can get 500 ZMax for about Au$85.00 +Au$15.00 in postage which is $Au 0.20 ea. That is the cheapest by a long margin.
That is only 20 gn projectiles. Anything other than that it is around Au$ 45.00/100.

i've seen the nosler shots for as cheap as .07ea (by the 1000) but seldom over .11 ea when they have overrun or "cosmetic blemished" I try and make 2-3 orders a year to absorb shipping costs (which isn't bad $12 flat rate) but sometimes you have to jump on the deals as they can go quick.

to my knowledge the "shots" line is actually made for you guys across the pond for culling roo's.

32gn projectiles

7 cents each is a bloody good price. I would not swage projectiles for that.
Had a go at swaging some 32 pills with some of my .530" jackets. Easily done and came out as a soft point as the jacket needs to be around .560"-.570" to make a nice open tip. Would post a pic but can not seem to make it work.
