Lapua Brass

A few years back I bought 200 .222 Rem Lapua cases. This year as I was shooting up the last of my lead core bullet-ed rounds before a switch to lead free, I had a complete case separation in my .222 Rem Martini Cadet. the fact that these cases had only three reloads on them was puzzling. After shooting up all my loaded ammo I full length resized and carefully visually examined as well as "paper clip" checking all six hundred cases for incipient separations. These were the Lapuas, 200 Noslers, and about 200 Winchesters of various vintages, some many times fired. Of the batch I rejected 49 cases, all showing signs of separation at exactly the same place, not just above the web, but half way between the head and the shoulder. All rejects were Lapuas. No other brand had any sign of separation. Guess which brand I won't buy again.

L Rivard, your description of the case separation of the 222 Lapua brass sounds exactly like what occurred with a blue box of 223 Lapua brass that I made into 20 Practical several years ago. I had five new boxes of the 223 Lapua brass and only had problems with that one particular box. About 35 pcs failed on the second or third firing half way up the length of the case by pulling into. The wall thickness at the case separation point "seemed" very thin in checking them. That has never occurred with any Lapua brass of any caliber before or since that I have obtained (having made many different wildcat cases from Lapua brass). I talked to Lapua about it. When I told them I'd made 20 Practical cases from it, they basically told me to take a hike! I found that comment from them interesting since it's my understanding their best selling brass is 220 Russian (which numerous wildcats are made from). Maybe it was just a fluke, or I made the 20 Practical brass incorrectly, but I've made thousands of pcs of Lapua brass into much more complicated wildcat brass with no issues. 410gauge

Thanks for that information. Nice to know someone else had the same experience. As it happens I have had a bit of experience trouble shooting deep draw metal products, not rifle brass but steel and aluminum containers. My best guess without examining the actual tooling is that some toolmaker missed forming a correct radius on a second or third draw punch. Guess that could happen to any producer, but I'll pass on Lapua anyway.
