Contender Barrel

Hi
Just got back from Post Office and found the most curious item there. It took me down Memory Lane for sure. Brand New in the original box, still has the factory grease on it. It is chambered in 219 Zipper (should go well with my 219 Wasp). Has the soft writing and I am assuming the deep blue of old. Also came with full set of Redding Form (# 1/ # 2/ &Trim)dies and a Redding Fl die set.

Now for my questions. I can't remember the last time I bought a barrel packaged like this one. I believe it was in the 80's. Does anyone know for sure when the were last packed like this? Or when they chambered for 219 Zipper?

Next question. Since the grease has been on the barrel for decades, I am sure. It has the wax paper stuck to it. How would you recommend cleaning it off?

Have had a couple of people ask about the collectors value. I can't imagine anyone offering me the INSANE AMOUNT it would take for me not to clean it up and shoot it LOL

Thanks in advance for your input and Happy New Years To ALL
Doug

Rem Oil and a paper towel seems to work

Doug: If this old memory serves me right I believe that the last time I saw such box/wrapping was when I first started into the contender's and I think that was the mid 60's. I still have a 11 inch .223 barrel, with that old deep blue finish.
As for the Zipper, maybe the same era and into the 70's, but that is just a guess on my part.
Looks like you scored well. Bill K :)

Thanks Bill

Not bad for a 40+ year old barrel. Can't wait to shoot IT

Thanks for the input

Are you were you can mount it up as a carbine, or like me in the USA, where under 16 inch a barrel has to be handgun/frame ?

I am in the good ole US, South Carolina to be exact so it will have to be a pistol. But then I shoot all of mine as pistol even my 20 inch 20 Tac. LOL

You know there is a fix for that :D

$200 and less than a month wait Via E-form 1. then you can go as short with a stock as your heart's content.

Barrel looks sweet Tred.

Yes, but I don't mind having some carbines and some in handgun form. A few calibers I have barrels for each type, in the same caliber. Not a problem, for me anyway.

Doug the first 219 Zipper Warren Center made for Dean Grennell. I remember reading about it, I think, in an early Reloading Digest. Early on they were Custom Shop only and it should be marked as such if yours was made by the custom shop. Calling the TCA might get you the info you want.

Hi Doug,

Judging from the sights, mid- 80's at the earliest would about right for your Zipper.

I remember picking up in TC barrels in interesting calibers with that box style back in the mid 80's to early-90's when I had the itch. Thankfully it did not last too long. Too many caliber options and too little cash. The herd was culled when I was bit by the BPCR bug. Although I did keep your Zipper's big brother, a .25-35 Win 10" bull with the solid lug nestled away in it's white corrugated cardboard box.

None the less, 219 Zipper... now that is cool. I am sure you will have fun with it.

All the best,

Michael.
