Primers 17 hornet
I use sm pistol primers in my 22h rifles.
I’m asuming that sm pistol primers are a no go in the 17h as the pressures are 20,000 psi or so higher in the 17h. What say? |
I use small rifle primers and they work just fine. After all it is a small rifle cartridge. Bill K :)

Any secret loads in your 17 hornet?

did work with some Lil gun, but just had issues with pressure spikes. I think, for me anyway 1680 is going to be the one this rifle likes CZ 527 American, with the 15.5 NTX bullet. ( since I am in Commie California) Bill K :) |
I use CCI 450's with Vihtavouri N 120. I can't find any logical reason NOT to use a thick cup primer on a centerfire 17. To each their own.....

I have a friend that loads the 20gr Vmax with 12.4gr Hodgdon CFE BLK and that is working really well for him. |
7 1/2 Rems, A1680 at 3650. I don't remember exact weight, but it's a little below max book load with 20 grain Vmax. I am going to try CFE BLK with 20's and A2200 with the 25's.

Thousands of 17AH at 12.2 1680 with 20gr Vmax and Winchester Small Rifle Primer. Only time I weigh the loads is when I get started just to see if my Harrells hasn't been messed with. Use Wilson neck die and brass will last a long long time.

I had two .17 Ackley Hornet barrels for Thompson-Center TCR rifles and both shot accurately with Rem 7-1/2 primers but a new barrel for use with a suppressor did not shoot as accurately with the old loads. Then I tried the CCI small rifle primers and got good accuracy, like 5/8 MOA. Also, this barrel is 18-1/2 inches long so that being on a break-over gun with a 7-inch silencer the overall length is about the same as a bolt gun with a 22-inch barrel, so it" pretty handy. In addition, it lost only about 100 fps with the short barrel since there is so little powder. Most of all, the report is really quiet and the there is not much of a sonic crack from the small diameter bullets. I've shot several raccoons, a bobcat and two coyotes with it, the furthest coyote at 205 yards. Each time an animal goes down it's hard to believe how effective it is for so little noise it makes. Anyway, if your .17 Hornet is not accurate, try a different primer. And if you want a really fun .17 Hornet, put a suppressor on it.

Don you’re killing me! Lol
I also use 7-1/2 primers as well as 1680 in three rifles as well as 4227 in a 14” handgun. I just bought the clf blk to try out but jane not got there yet cause I’m working up loads with it in the 22 Jet and 40 gr bullets. |
