In my case, the 10-inch-barrels for my 221s, load-for-load, underperform the rifles by 500fps and 200 yards or more.

I need fragile bullets for sure.

Yeah, one of my boring habits in this sport is getting attached to a cartridge and keeping with it.

I fell in love with the cute little 221 50 years ago, along with its XP100 and even Contender...

That's a good point about the Core Lokts, and the 300 Winchester is a Weatherby-class velocity monster.

Apparently, the bullet was still traveling too fast at 200 yards to work as a big game...

I vote with the consensus: use a lighter bullet, and hopefully one more willing to disintegrate on that size varmint. The results you got from the factory 50s was disheartening.

That is a haunting result from a .300 Winchester and a 180 grain hunting-grade bullet!

It performed the way I'd expect from my .220 Swift with a 50 grain varmint design.

Obviously, the bullet...

I'm in the 221 FireBall camp too.

Bought three XP100s back in the 70s and 80s in that persuasion, along with a couple or three Contender barrels.

Still shoot them.

So do Grandsons :-)

I hope you get that 221 reamer soon. I love that caliber so much that I bought three of the original XP100s in the 1970s and still have them.

They are wonderful.

Thanks for that tidbit BCB! So they dropped a grain and got 4000fps. Ain't that something.

I was born a few years after the 220 Swift came out in, I believe, 1935 or so, and I grew up in the 1950s...

Thanks for the info!

I'm fortunate in still having a stash of 33-grain 5mm VMax bullets that I bought before Hornady dropped a grain in that caliber for whatever reason they had. I use them in the...

Yeah, I remember in 1965 the "press" was all over that hype: the .22 caliber at extremely high velocity out of the black rifles would tumble when it hit and tear limb from limb. One shot and it was...

So the banded bullets are not a new idea?

I wonder why they are not in general use.
