I had a 17 jet barrel from bullberry. The neck their reamer cut was longer than you could get with 357 mag brass so I used 357 max. Super stout brass.

I have a couple 17 caliber xp-100's. A 13" 17AH and a 14" 17fb. I don't think you'll regret going with a 13" for the squirrel.
