Thumbs up Nice stuff, Doug!!

My 20BR has a Searcy(Hall clone) action, 24" K&P 10" twist barrel, Jewell trigger, McMillan stock, and 8.5-25xAO Lewy.

During sighting-in, I pushed the 40VMax to 4240fps.....AND the bolt still...

Unhappy Walt Berger has passed

Gents,

It has been reported, over on the Benchrest board, that Walt has died at 92 years young.

I spoke with him many times over the years.

He was always a fine...generous guy.

R.I.P....

Lightbulb Downunder........

If I recall correctly....I used between 7 and 9 grains(surely someone else remembers better than I do) of Unique, with a wad of paper towel on top.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

P.S. As for the...

Lightbulb Kiwi.......

The Leica/Vectronix laser rangefinder binoculars do show the distance(and compass degrees, in some models) through the righthand eyepiece.

Of note.....I fail to see how "eye dominance" can be a...

Thumbs up Yep.......

You and me both!

In fact.....on flat terrain.....I'm unaware of anyone that consistently can. Even through spotting scopes and binoculars, the depth-of-field is flattened tremendously. What one...

Lightbulb For PD's..........

I suggest getting a rangefinder with the finest beam divergence that you can "afford".
Small targets at long range, across level ground.........makes accurate ranging difficult.

Pictured, is my...

Thumbs up Yep....TinMan.......

Two old engineers......and we both have old Atlas lathes in the garage. Whoda thunk it??;)

Question Questions.......

How do you KNOW, for sure, that the twist is 1 in 9.0" ? Did you personally measure it? How did you measure it?

Is the barrel reasonably clean? When cleaned.....how do you KNOW it is clean. How do...

Lightbulb Years ago......

.......I settled on using the "Whitetail" tools(designed by Dick Wright) for primer pocket uniforming.

I bored out a 7/16" socket to press fit the "tool"into.....for powered use.

Here's a pic...

Lightbulb Borescope.......

Santa brought me one of the Teslong borescopes a while back......but I haven't tried using it yet.

One note about trying it in 17's. You'd have to "sand" it down to less than a 0.168" bore...

Lightbulb But..........

Casehead expansion memory cannot be "sized" out of the brass.....or it's tendency to try to return to it's widest expansion with subsequent firings.

As I said:

"Unless you know, for a FACT,...

Note.........

The "datum" line, I'm refering to, is at the rear area of the case( approximately 0.2" forward of the base)....not the front.

Exclamation A word of caution......

First.....you're starting out with "once-fired" 223 brass.....correct??

This is NOT good.........given that you're going through all of these operations to "fit" a 17-222 chamber precisely.

Lightbulb A thought......

With a PROPERLY chambered rifle, factory loaded 22 Hornet ammo can be fired, and fire-formed to 22KH (or 22AH).

Since the Hornet case headspaces on the rim..........creating a false shoulder...

Thumbs up I posted this pic last month......

It's the 17-222 I built some years ago.

It uses a factory Sako single-shot L461 action, Pac-Nor 27" 3 groove 9" twist barrel, factory Sako PPC-BR stock, Leuy 6.5-20xAO scope..........and now, a...

Thumbs up Fast........

Good to hear.

One note of caution, if I may.

I consider a 20 ounce setting, for the standard Sako No. 4 trigger assembly, to be highly questionable and likely unsafe.

In my experience, over...

Lightbulb I've always.....

......sized the necks down in three stages.

I use the old "double-ended" die.....then the full-length die.

Then fire-form cases with 7gr. Unique w/ paper towel wadding(no bullet).

Many, many...

Lightbulb I would expect....

.....that the decreased headspace dimension is NOT from the firing pin hitting the rear of the already dented primer.

Rather that the headspace change is due to the firing pin ASSEMBLY slaming...

Lightbulb Sako L461 ignition problems......

.......can involve a few things.

1. Firing pin spring.......I check mine on a set of bathroom scales....22 to 28 lbs.

2. Firing pin protrusion......measure/set at 0.050" to 0.060".

3. Primer...

Set-up and procedure is critical. Since you'll only be doing it once........do it the best you're...
