I don't know for sure if this would work for you or not, but I've rigged several Savages for single shot by just using an appropriate size and length of dowel fit into the magazine and sanded enough for the bolt to clear it, then hog out some wood from the dowel to fashion a cartridge tray and away you go. Takes a little time and effort, but once done, works like a charm.

I would like a picture of your dowel fix some time.
My issue was the cartridge fell to the left or right side of the feed lips.
