The ARVNs used a lot of .38 specials. I traded a couple "C" rations cases for a couple a 50 cal cans of 38 Spl ammo.

no problem GI.
This reminds me of an old friend, now deceased. He was an Aussie Commando during WWII fighting the Japs in New Guinea. He told me one day when I asked him about what weapons he used and said he used an M1 carbine. I was a bit surprised by this and asked him where he not only got it from but how the hell did he get ammo ???? We didn't use the M1 so no ammo through Aussie stores. Said he swapped his SMLE 303 for the carbine and whenever a new arrival of Americans turned up he would just walk amoungst them asking for ammo. He said those GI's were the most generous blokes going. Would give him as much as he wanted. I also asked why the little M1 and his reasoning was that when they came under attack he could get off three rounds as he was diving for the ground.
