When I'm working up a new load, for any bolt rifle, I start at a medium load from the book and work up till I get sticky extraction.
That is my max load for that rifle. No matter what the combination of bullet/powder/primer/barrel.
When I'm working up a load for one of my Martini's, in a standard calibre, I stay on the low side of the range. You want reliable extraction with these rifles.
For the wildcats, I use Quickload to get a max load, in the safe pressure range for the class of rifle I'm using and go under that to start with.
