i think the 222 was officially made in the early 1950's, while the 223 was made in mid 1960s. the 222 had a 1 in 14" bore(good for 40-55gr bullets). the 223 have a plethora of bores, 1 in 7" to 1 in 14". add to fact, that the 223 speeds are 100 - 200fps faster than the 222. the 223 ammo is widely available, the 222 is not.

the 222 shines over the 223 is accuracy. i've never seen a rifle that was inaccurate(222). i have seen a 223 that drove a guy nuts. we both decided to sell the 223 and got a 222 rem in a rem m700bdl.
