Smile CFE 223 powder

Has anyone tried this powder in the .17 Remington. My .223 loves it. Hogdons sites as a listing for it. I'm going to try it soon.

Default My thoughts...

... on CFE223, make me feel that it would be a touch fast for the 17Rem.

In general, I have found that powders that work well in the 223 also work very well in the 17M4/17FB, and that powders that work well in the 22-250 work well in the 17Rem.

Examples are how Varget, N-140 and several others work in the 22-250 and the 17 Rem.

This is a general observation, as I have not used CFE223 in anything! I have too much N-133 and N-130 stashed away for my 223's and Varget and N-140 and N-540 for my 22-250's. The N-XXX powders are coming back into the stores, and I highly recommend them as super clean shooting powders.

I would rely on the manufacturer's recommendation, looking at the data provided for the 22-250. If it isn't recommended for the 22-250 then I would approach using it in the 17Rem cautiously.

My 2 cents. Maybe overvalued!

Alex

I use CFE 223 in my .204 loads. Excellent at keeping the fouling at bay, but very temperature sensitive. I always keep my CFE loads in a cooler for stability.

I have actually tried it in a Cooper M21 17 rem. , any bullet/powder charge combo I tried would not group worth a Damn. 20gr and 25gr bullets. My father in law loves CFE, me not so much.

I've read a lot about it, seems no one really finds it exceptional at all. I was going to try it in my 20BR but thought better of it. It is really another common powder that has had the specs tightened up a little and then re-named, so you may not find it so great when you try it. Let us know, the marketing sounds great. Larry

I also have been questioning CFE223, I shoot 80.5 & 55 gr FBHP Bergers in my 223. I'm using R#15 and 8208XBR. It would be nice to use just one powder.

I tried cfe223 and got very wide swings in velocity. It is very temp sensitive. I no longer use it.
