Default Ruger 22 hornet Accuracy

Contemplating purchasing a heavy barrel ruger hornet. Anyone with good or bad experience with one? Will be a squirrel, jackrabbit and crow rifle..

Mine had awful accuracy. Tried everything to get it to shoot minute of a pie plate at 100 yards.
Ended up putting a Lilja 17 cal barrel chambered in 17AH on it and now its my favorite vermin getter.
Also had the smith do a trigger job while he had it. That may have been some of the problem at least...

I own 3 22 Hornets, and the sporter weight Ruger is by far the most accurate of the three. It is boringly accurate with any ammo and/or bullet choice I've fed it. No experience with a HB model.

I think the first two responses sum up what you can expect with regard to accuracy when you get a 22 Hornet, no matter who the maker. For some reason it's just not an inherently accurate round. Probably the most unpredictable round I have been around. Add to that you are considering a Ruger & your chances of good accuracy fall even farther. The only Hornets I've been around that gave fairly consistent accuracy, I'm talking only around one MOA, were the CZ & Sako. Don't expect any Hornet to be a "tack driver", but considering it's only a 150 yard rifle, it doesn't need to be. If you ever get one that shoots "bug holes"(there are a few out there) never let it go.

My cz Sporter weight 22 hornet is a quarter inch gun all day. I thought the round would be a 1 inch group because of past experience with a contender carbine. But the cz flopped that notion on its head. Load development was simple. First load I tried and couldn't be happier.

My son has a HB 77 Hornet and it's in the .750-1.00" category. That is bone stock with no accurizing work. As Hawkeye points out, with the limited range the accuracy is acceptable. I have a #1 in hornet and it does just slightly better holding right at .750 consistently. I have tried at least a dozen different 34-40 grain bullets, 3 types of powder, crimped- uncrimped bullets, small pistol, small rifle primers of various manufacturers and that is the best mine will do. With the CZ being a little cheaper it may be the better option. I have seen some groups posted here from the CZ's and they are impressive compared to the Rugers we have. On the other hand, I have not had much of a problem hitting anything out to the 200 yard mark with mine.

I know , I must not have read the question.

Think about a CZ 527, 17 Hornet.

This will add 100yd to your range.

Loaded ammo is cheap and most are shooting tiny groups.

Already have one and it does shoot very well. I'd be more swayed to the cz if they made a heavy barrel 22 hornet instead of just sporters.

On the ruger I already have 2 magazines and 2 manners stocks laying around that I should do something with.

Well of course I will disagree with you.

As the owner of a decent amount of .22 Hornets I can tell you that it may take some effort depending on the gun but the .22 Hornet is an accurate round. While those 77/22 Rugers are great looking guns, they have not helped the reputation of the .22 Hornet. Ruger made another rifle in .22 Hornet, the Ruger #1. My Ruger #1B is an easy .5 MOA rifle shooting 40 gr. Zmax bullets. Took some time to figure it out but now that I have the load it is a great shooter.

Some of my other great shooting factory .22 Hornets are my 3 Anschutz's. They are all sub MOA including my Exemplar pistol. Again, sometimes it takes some work to find what it likes but when you do they shoot.
