The Model 38 single-shot actions were later in '94/'95 and rare in CCM chamberings.

Good post Kiwi:
Don't think I've seen any other Coopers ever besides the two I've had except on here in pictures. The .17 VR I got from foxhunter was originally .17 CCM: ser# 17-207. The 20 VarTarg I bought from Phil and just sold a month ago. Ser # 2251 No letters on either one. Both M-38, the VarTarg was a single shot and new, has the Buick vents. The .17 was shortened and rechambered to .17 VR, that was a mag type repeater that gave both Bob and I feeding trouble. We both sent it back to Cooper to sort out. My turn they gave up on it and changed to single shot. I still have this one.

I am unsure but think that following the formation of the new company in 1998 the letter "V" may have been added to the serial number, can anyone confirm that? Dan Cooper told me the letter designation was used until mid year 2005 when the caliber designation was eliminate and they went to straight sequential numbers. Kiwi and Kerry,
Thanks for the history lesson on the Cooper Rifles I dearly love. The only thing I may disagree with is that only 75 Model 40's were produced. If so I've been very lucky to own 2 of them over the years. The first one was NIB and sported the serial number VEGAS5. I believe it was most likely a shot show gun. It was so darn pretty I couldn't shoot it and ended up selling it online to a guy that wanted it a heck of a lot more then I did. When I spoke to this gentleman he stated he owned 2 other Model 40's as well. I still have the one Model 40 and I believe it to be exhibition grade wood. It's gorgeous. I will look at my letter designations tonight to see if there are any discrepancies or if I can add to the history here. Also, one other thing....Kerry and I have discussed this and I missed out on one and it still makes me sick. Early on with the Model 57 or 57M the Jackson Squirrel had different checkering. I had one in my hands chambered in 17 Mach 2 and thought at $2,000 it was too high. I still kick myself in the butt for that. The first 50 rifles had much better checkering on them. There was a story about it on Rimfire Central some time back. |

Anybody own any stainless action Coopers? A buddy and I visited Cooper in the early to mid 90's while trout fishing the Bitterroot. At that time Dan had facilities in Stevensville and Victor Mt. While touring the Victor facility, I noted a machinist working on what appeared to be a stainless Model 21 action. I asked Dan if he planned on offering a stainless action and his only reply was "I know I should not have showed you this area". I am not aware of a stainless action ever being offered. Guessing maybe a few prototypes. I asked Tom Thomas(The Outdoorsman) if he was aware of any stainless actions and all I got was a sly smile. Even after a few beers in the Longbranch Saloon in Victor, Dan was mum on the subject of stainless actions.

stainless
Look near the bottom of the left column - stainless receiver is a $150 option. It does not appear to available in all models though, no idea why.
I was thinking of having a model 21 built with a stainless receiver about 5 years ago and they offered to do it, some things at Cooper have changed in the last few years and they may not offer "one-ofs" any longer. http://cooperfirearms.com/our-rifles/custom-options drover |

Kerry,
Good to see your posts. That is an interesting look on the Hornet. I doubt that it is stainless though, the test target is from 2001 and to the best of my recollection they weren't thinking of stainless actions at that time. But then as you know with Cooper anything is possible. I suspect that it is a cerakote or something similar. Starting to get a little winter up here, give a call when you have time. drover (Jim) |
