For starters when changing from .222mag, to .223 for my first one.
A former hunting buddy and I combined our bullets & came up with 19 different one's. I figured a load that i wanted to use and started sorting bullets til the best two worked out. And settled on the v'max 40gr. Since it made 5 shots in under 1/4". Since that time Iv'e felt a real good start is just settling on a good medium vel load, then sorting bullets until you find the best shooter of the bunch and stick with it. I've never been one that ran things to the max, not even the hotrod cars I had. They'll all run faster and longer than we can. Why would anyone drive that way all the time? Second question: "Why would anyone run his fine rifle at the very max all the time?" Yeah, I've outgrown such things a long time ago. Sooner or later I'll bet most of you will too. Though it's sure fun throwing up the dirt in the corners!!
