Which Cooper?
Trying to identify a cooper rifle. The stock has the vents like a Montana Varmint, but the owner says its a Varmint Extreme. Could the extreme be ordered with the vent stock? Any other differences between the two?

Cooper will do many different options with their guns, I beleive one of the custom options is the buick style stock (vents).

Call Cooper
It is most likely NOT the Extreme, but the easy way is to call Cooper with the serial number. Also, the original box would have the info you request.

Used to be that the serial number had a VE in it. Don't know if that still holds true or not.

Cooper
As mentioned all the Varmint Extremes I've owned had the letters VE in the serial number. No vents and a different checkering pattern on the grip that would wrap around and touch right behind the tang.

Cooper
As Chuck said, the checkering wraps completely around the wrist, but also is in a much finer lines per inch.
Call Cooper as suggested, or look at the pattern (maybe both!) Alex |

Thanks for all the help.
I'll take a look at the serial number and checkering |

I have seen a lot of older Varmint Extremes that did not have VE Serial Numbers . I have a NIB Varminter that does have a VE Serial Number . All the older Varmint Extremes I've seen had a Metal Pistol Grip Cap and Checkered Bolt Knob , and the fancier Stock Checkering mentioned above . In general the Grade of wood ( at least on older Rifles ) was better than the Standard Model . Not sure how this fits in , but the original Standard Coopers ( the really old Models ) were all called the Varmint Extreme if I remember correctly .

xring is correct in that all earlier models were 'Varmint Extremes' featuring a better wood. Also as previously stated, the checkering pattern met at the top of the grip and the trigger guard was steel, not aluminum. Checkered bolt knob was an option, not standard and the grip cap was also steel, not aluminum
Serial numbers: I have 3 'Varmint Extremes' -A M21 .221 Fireball with a prefix of "E", A M21 .223 with a prefix of "A" and a M22 .22/250 with a prefix of "PVA" Just to brag a bit, Dan Cooper (while enjoying booze and steaks at 'Chez Lunde's') wrote out a statement that that 22/250 was the 1st 22/250 made by Cooper. |
