Default forming 17 fireball from 223?

Is it possible and how difficult is it to form 17fb from 223 brass?

I have an annealing machine and neck turning tools if that is of any assistance to the process?!

It is much easier to form from 221 Fireball brass, simply neck it down. From 223 you must shorten the case quite a bit. With Fire Ball brass you can run your brass through the seating die and then the sizing die and loose not brass in forming.

With the Redding form dies it isn't too bad. Don't anneal first or they will crush! Anneal last. Another trick I use is my Battery Drill on a Wilson trimmer to trim. Sawing off on the trim die sucks for me. I use Imperial lube and after getting the feel for things, i.e. cursing and swearing until I got things right, I don't lose any. It's a nice Winter project and the primer pockets on my WCC07 cases last, well I don't know I haven't lost one yet....

Just about 1000 steps per 100 cases.

I formed some from .222 Rem. Brass and I wound up with a neck-wall thickness of .017". You definitely have to turn the necks and then anneal.

About 1000 steps per 100 cases? Adam is stretching it a bit.
More like 950 steps, if you hold your mouth just right.

Default use a 221 form die first

Then cut the cases a few thousands long with the harbor freight mini chop saw. Deburr the case mouth and the flash hole. Then run them through your seater unscrewed about one turn, then the sizer set to your chamber. All that's left is trimming and neck turning.
use a good lube like Imperial

Thanks for the responses guys!

I'm based in Australia so I don't want to build a gun and then get caught not being able to get brass down the track. 223 would be my last option but it's always available.

Currently I can get 221 brass BUT from what I have seen the 17 fireball is about .020" longer than a 221 or 17 mk4. Will 221 brass form up to be the correct length (or longer) for a factory 17 fireball chamber or be better suited to the shorter 17 mk4 chamber?

Default Sure it can be done

If you do not mind a long drawn out process this can be a good winter project. Unless you are after the best quality brass you can get; I think there are better options today.
My experience was I did not care for cutting the brass down or neck turning. I turned the necks twice to blend the shoulder better. Roughed turned the necks at the 221 fireball stage & finish turned second to last step b4 annealing.
I have produced some super 17 FB brass from Lapua 223 brass. Ill save this brass for the bench and weight sort the Highplainsbrass for the field.

With that plus 1 on search for highplainsbrass and they have them already done for $35 per hundred. You still may wish to turn these necks and anneal before fire forming in that order.
