17 Remington dilemma of sorts
Trying to keep speed around 4000, with a full case. I have not found a slow powder that in turn gives me accuracy.
Should I just quit fooling with loads and go with accuracy and not pay any attention to case capacity? CFE223 has given me great accuracy and crazy fast speed. 4320 didn’t perform as I had hoped. I just ran some more loads with Varget and Benchmark. I am still mulling over numbers with these. Bullets are Vmax and Berger’s 25 grain. This barrel (Shilen Select) has not given any bad groups with pretty much anything I have fed it. This cartridge has not been hard to work with at all. Moving up 2/10’s at a time I can guess pretty close to what the next one will be. |

It seems the smaller the bore, the more sensitive the round is to temperature related pressure excursions, especially when you are pushing them hard. I was using WW760 with 30 grain Bergers and had "an issue" when I left the ammo in a hot car. So now (A): I make sure that I don't leave ammo in the car and (B): load with temperature stable powders whenever I can.
You can dope for wind, compensate for drop, but accuracy is beyond you control once you're out in the field. |

My 1/9 Lilja barrel is very accurate with H414, 29 and 30 gr bullets. So accurate I haven't really tried anything else. I developed the load in October for winter hunting. No noticeable poi change in cold weather. I'm running it 3950 average.

My 17 Rem has a 1:10 Shilen barrel, and am pleased with the results, but I loaded it down to be safe in 100°F+ temperatures in the PD fields. I have been loading 25gr HP or 25 VMAX with W760/H414, about 1gr below max, and am still getting around 3800fps with groups of around 3/4" for 5 at 100yds. Can usually get around 75-80 rounds before it needs to be cleaned. I typically opt for accuracy over max velocity.

My barrel is 26", minimum spec, short freebore reamer. 26.7 gr of powder in Remington nickle case. Much "faster" barrel than the factory barrel.

I've used H414 with good success. Currently I am working with Alliant 2520. Ran across a load using the 2520 with 25 grain HP and really like it. Not quite running the same speed as you are looking for, but works well on PDs. Weather messes with the 17 Rem a lot. Unfortunately, the 17 Rem stays home most of the time since I acquired the 20VT and 204.

Varget, looks like 22.8 to 23.2, 3800-3950.
Benchmark looks like 22.2 to 22.6, 4071-4089. Has anyone here used Big Game. I had read guys were having good results with it. I ran across some before I even had the rifle, and I didn’t look to see about published data. |

I know I am lucky to be able to shoot the 25gr VMAX at all with 1:10. The 25gr HP does shoot a bit better. I bought the rifle used, a L461 it came with the 24" 1:10 Shilen on it, but otherwise it looks just like a H&R P317. I have measured the twist several times, and it is slightly faster than a 1:10, but not a full 1:9.
