Just picked up a .17 Squirrel and was looking for some info on what bullet would be accurate and good for small varmints. Thanks in advance.

squirrel bullets
I shot 20gr Nagles out of mine, no luck with the 20gr vmax or the 20gr cheapies.
I do have a new Wilson 17 Squirrel chamber seater for 40.00 if your interested. |

So far I am using 20gr SHOTS, but mostly in fire forming loads. Seem pretty accurate but can't say how much so out past 100 yards or on anything other than paper.

the 20 gr vmax is a good bullet and will hit harder at the 200 yard range then one would think. That said the little 17 vmax, 15 NTX and the 15 gr Bergers are awesome on short range PDs! Really makes a whop when you hit em!! (I never did try the 18 gr Berger)

not sure now days. I stocked up with some back when that's what was available. I used to make manny stops at Hornady looking for rejects and sometimes get lucky.
The 15 MEF was super explosive and it would vaporize garden vegetables but the 17 gr vmax seemed to hit PDs much harder.

Get some heavy bullets from someone if you have a desire to use reduced velocities (subsonic) in your squirrel. If you cast, try the 32gr NOE mold for 0.172" These were shot with a 17VHA40°
a cartridge with 12.75gr H2O capacity as opposed to the 17 squirrel case which has about 8 gr. Last edited by 17tbs; 12-25-2016 at 02:31 AM. |
