I have 3, one in 223, one in 20VT and a M57 in 17HMR. I won't part with mine and have no complaints. IMHO, better than Kimbers.

I have 3 Coopers; 20VT, 6BR, 6.5-284. All 3 easily shoot under 1/2in at 100yd with good handloads. My first try with my 6.5-284 put 5 shots into 3/4in at 200 yards. My 20VT is a Model 38 but the Model 21 is also nice. Just get it, they shoot!

Default Glad you bought it Jim...

Cooper does offer different twists for an up charge,so it sounds like an even better deal, the barrels are usually marked when it was a special twist. If the 39 Sierra and 40 V-Max work you will be sure of the twist, nothing wrong with the 32’s in the VarTarg either though.Sounds like you are set for a bunch of fun.

Just got off the phone with Cooper and she confirmed what you posted. The twist rate is listed on the barrel only if it's a special order. They consider the 10 twist a common twist like the 12 etc.

I'm new to Coopers and something else she told me that the 21 & 38 models are the exact same rifle with the only difference being the calibers that are offered for that particular model. I've read a lot of post here and other forums on the Cooper and folks say they get the 38 for a particular reason and the 21 didn't offer that. I guess if they're talking about the caliber that's true. Otherwise they're the same.

Through my serial number I found it was made in 2014.

Smile I once replied to the same query:

"Don't buy the Cooper!

They tend to multiply in your closet, cannot be made to shoot over 1/2 minute of angle, look so good that you will worry about scratching up the stock, and have great factory backup and high resale value."

Unfortunately, this purchase may cause you to become a Cooperholic. I have owned as many as 27 at once. Yes, I have sent several back that had a problem, but they came back shooting 1/2 MOA or better. In two cases the rifle was re-barreled.

I've won the Saubier postal shoot twice shooting my Coopers, once with a 17M4, another with a 20VT. One of the groups was a
hummer."

The 20VT is very easy to load for. My favorite powders for it are N-130 and N-120 with 32 grain bullets.

If the stock is nice with no scratches, the barrel is clean with no visible wear, the price is reasonable.

At age 82 with the groundhogs in Tidewater disappearing due to 'yotes and burrows being poisoned, I've been thinning the heard, but I will never be without a 20VT, 17M4m, or 17AH.

There is no 12 step to get you away from this addiction.

Alex

The 21 and 38 are not the same. I just measured my 21 and my 38 to confirm what I already knew, the action on a 38 is 1" shorter than the action of a 21

I agree with varmintshooter, but didn't want to walk downstairs to go measure. My M21 is from 1998 and my M38 is from 2001. Sometime after 2001, I believe the M38 had some changes made in the bolt also (lug length/size, I think). That may have been about that same time that some calibers were dropped from the M38 and were only made available in the M21.

What varmintshooter said, i believe is correct
I think it was Alex that wrote a article in Small Caliber News, he had a few pictures of 3 bolts ( model 21, new model 38, & old model 38) If i remember correct between the old and new 38 it showed new 38 a little longer and the beefed up recoil lugs. I hope someone else remember seeing this also and can post up the pictures
