Bummer......... I've never tried shooting a 25 grain bullet in a 17 M4/17FB........... 20's work so much better in the little case. JMO - BCB

1. What is your powder charge and bullet used? I would like to compare to what I found when testing. FWIW my testing is done measuring actual pressures. 2 If IMR4198 is so good in the 17R why does Hodgdon not show data for it in the 17R? |

1. I never give out load data to be misused by someone starting out who does't know better. (Hint: I'm not referring to you in that statement) Data for IMR4198 does exist and has for years. 2. You'll have to ask Hodgdon why they don't show IMR4198. They'll probably tell you that its too fast, as we both recognize. I just know it works for me and has worked for me for years. And I've tried a lot of other powders. I've said many times that you won't get the best velocity from it but at 3900+ fps, I'm more interested in the accuracy that it consistently gives and has given me in a number of 17 Rem rifles. YMMV. -BCB

H4198
I was curious enough that I had a peek at the burn rate chart to see where IMR4198 ranked.
Its right there with RL7 ... which is a very fast powder and very far up the list from H4895 that I use and even farther from Varget ...which is being used by others. If anyone plans to use IMR4198 for 17R then I would proceed very slowly with powder increments while load building as results can change quickly. |

Any 17 or 20 caliber cartridge that I have ever loaded I have used 0.1 grain increments on the upper end of recommended charges and 0.2 grain increments on the beginning lower charges. Small caliber cartridge reach very steep and high pressure spikes/peaks very quickly in the ignition sequence. -BCB

I recently read another article that discouraged the use of IMR4198 when there are so many more "better / safer" choices.
