Well it sure wasn't warming of rounds as we had mostly cool cloudy days here in the Livingston MT area. I agree that would be a reason for hot loads but it didn't happen this shoot. My friend has (had) 800 rounds he purchased for this fly in from Atlanta, GA gopher hunt. Also purchased a new CZ for these annual gopher safaris we do. At my suggestion he thoroughly cleaned the bore before firing a shot. He shot about 10 shots for a rough site in just before flying to Montana for the gopher shoot.
I'll try to contact Hornady about this when we get home today.

I have only fired 5 of this lot # 3122879
One of the five with blackend case head and loose primer.
I still have 270 rounds of this number. Kenny

Default Let me add----

The whole case head face is black and I don't THINK it was a pin hole in the edge of the primer cup. I experienced that with a bad lot of Remington primers years ago and those DID cut holes in the face of my CZ Ackley Hornet bolt face. This leak seems to be 'full perimeter' leak around the primer edges. I need to get home for a better inspection with magnification.

Nearest I can tell, the primer pocket
and the base of the case expanded 0.002.
There is some variables in the primer hole
but not larger than my Remington hornet cases . Kenny

Has anybody contacted Hornady about this issue? They would have been my first call.

Default Call to Hornady...

That should have been my first call but signal strength was iffy to non existant in the fields. We also didn't worry about it too much until we had 6 or 7 occurances as he shot up 700 rounds of the 800 rounds brought. It got to be more than just an odd occurance. Being in the fields of an expensive fly in trip gopher shoot made the decision to 'stop shooting' not one we wanted. We shot just about all the ammo - 3500 rounds for 3 guys and 5 rifles over 4 days of gopher shooting and did not want to 'stop'.
Only one rifle was a 17 Hornady Hornet. We brought one 17 HMR, two 17 Ackley Hornets, and the one new CZ 17 Hornady Hornet. Lots of fun was had by all!

I only had the one occurrence, granted out of five.
Rather than a bunch of people calling Hornady
I decided I would let Alan call.
He has experience with the hornet case. Kenny

Alan,
my CZ Fireball did the same thing as your Hornet when I first got it during the first production run of the Fireballs. It happened a half dozen times so I checked everything out including firing pin protrusion. Even tried two other bolts with no other occurances. Once I put my bolt back in it never happened again....
Nearly ten years on still no problems...
