Default Lapua 221 brass info

Received Lapua 221 Fireball brass from Graf & Sons. Lot number is P00773001/0721114. Measured the neck wall thickness on two cases. Measured each case at four points located 90* apart using a ball micrometer. The average neck wall thickness was .0129 inches. Thus, the loaded neck diameter will be approx .250 inches for the 221 Fireball.

Took one case and formed a 20 Vartarg. The average neck wall thickness of the formed case was .01383. I seated a flat base Sierra 32 grain Blitzking measuring .2040 at the base and the loaded neck diameter measured .2318 using a micrometer.

Default Use with .232 reamers??

Thanks for the info. Our reamer has a .232 neck diameter and does well with the remington 221 brass. Based on this initial measurement with a bullet seated seems like a new reamer might be needed with a .234 neck diameter. I am curious to hear others thoughts and views.

I loaded up sum new lapua brass in my 20 vartarg. Neck with a 39 SBK bullet measures .2305. Fired the case with 17.5gr H4198. Reloaded it and the neck before the bullet measured .229. It will work in the .232 neck chamber 20 Vartargs but I would recommend you turn the neck just abit to have alittle more clearance and so the bullet grip when fired will let the bullet drop in the case.

So, for a neck chamber diam. of .232" like I have, what would the optimal clearance be around the neck? Is .228" with with bullet in any good giving me .002" each side? Cheers

MFG_BOP, You would be OK. It is generally accepted that you do not want less than .001" clearance on each side.

Powder Valley is now out of stock! They were selling it cheaper, but I'm glad I got mine from Graf and Sons while they had it. Ordered it a couple days ago and it arrived today. Looks really good.
