I anneal with a lead pot, get lead to 750-800, dip case neck and shoulder in oil, then dip the neck and shoulder in lead until the case gets too hot to hold, drop in water to cool. Hold case near the head. You need a thermometer to get the lead temp correct. May be better ways, but it is hard to destroy a case doing it this way.

Be very cautious in dipping anything into lead, especially if it has moisture or water on it. You can cause a very bad eruption or explosion with hot lead in a pot.

Good advice. Please do this outside with a fan behind you or wind at your back as well. Lead at that temp is not safe to be breathing vapors from.

“The problem is that lead starts to vaporize when heated over 752 degrees F, and you can end up breathing in the poisonous fumes.”

Yes it should be done outside, because of fumes, and as was mentioned by others, do not get moisture or sweat drops in the lead. When I drop them in water, the bucket is on the ground and the lead pot above it, so no water splashes in the lead. Like anything else you have to be careful of what you are doing.

If you're holding the case by the head to anneal, you don't need water to cool the brass. I seriously don't think the head would get much over 125* before you let go of it. Well below the 400* it would take to effect the head of the case.

I trimed them before annealing them. IIRC, .005 longer than max. That allows for the case mouth to suck back when the shoulder blows out. I always will run a few through the action to make sure I am not crimping the case mouth when leaving them long. I have never had any that would do that, but I like to check anyway.

I use a CH case trimmer and a Wilson 22 Hornet sized case holder. Works great.

I called and talked to Bullberry about ordering one of his form dies , He suggested I start by running through my 20 VT die first, than through FL hornet die . Did 50 cases tonight, worked great !
FYI …. He is starting a batch of his form dies tomorrow .
