Default Accuracy from Small-Caliber Cooper Rifles

We hear conflicting reports about the accuracy Cooper owners have found with their rimfire (M57) and small-caliber centerfire rifles. On the one hand, Cooper states an accuracy guarantee for their centerfire rifles of a ½” 3-shot group at 100 yards and yet use less-than-stellar Wilson barrels on their rifles. This centerfire accuracy guarantee is shot in their 47-yard indoor range, so that it would have to be ¼” at that distance to prorate to ½” at 100.

What level of accuracy have you guys on this forum obtained with your .22-caliber and 6 mm. centerfire Coopers (M21, 38, and 51 in particular)? A ½” 3-shot group is not a ½” 5-shot group, and I generally shoot 5-shot groups when doing load development for accuracy.

I have shot half inch groups or better @ 100 yds with all of the coopers I own (7) 2-38's 3-21's 1-22 and 1-57. My newest is at least 4 or 5 years old so cant speak to the new guns they are selling. I have a model 21 varminter in 223 that is the most accurate.

My Cooper model 51 in 6x45, is shooting great, 75gr Serria HP is the most accurate, but everything 58-85gr is well inside an inch, with five shot at 100m.
With multiple powder's, win or lapua brass, and federal golds or Br-4, The least fussy rifle, I have ever owned.
Model 51, 6x45 (.223) 20" tube, 1-10" twist, swarvo Z5.

I have loads built for 60 Serria, 65 v-max and Berger, 70gr B-Tips, 75gr Serria H/Points and 80gr blitz, and working on a 85gr for deer,
H4198, benchmark, and CFE.223, for powders,
The only bullet it wont shoot are 85gr speer boat tails, couldn't even hit 4 sheets of A4 paper at 100m,

Also have a Cooper Model 21 in 6x47 Remington, and its very accurate, but I haven't experimented as much with different powder, bullet choices. 1/2" easy with good condition brass, BLC or varget and a 65 v-max or 70 gr B-tip, showing considerable promise, with 75gr Serria HP too.
I am impressed with both rifles,

I would wager that on most rifles from Cooper, any deviation from the stated accuracy claim is due to the shooter rather than the rifle. Now, there are exceptions and every manufacturer puts out a lemon every so often, but a quick call and pack-up back to Cooper should solve the issue.

wow, Wilson barrels are less-than-stellar? That is what Bullberry uses and my rifle shoots very accurate.

I'm with South Pender on this one.....

I own several Cooper rifles from 17 to 28 caliber and none of them will shoot better than 3"-5" at 100 yards. I think its definitely the barrels.............

Sorry to say, I only have two of their rifles. Both are Model 21's, one left bolt and one right bolt. A 204R with the synthetic stock and a 20VT cradled by walnut. Off the bench on a calm day, 5 shot/100 yard groups are expected to be no more than 0.25" . Of course, I have the ability to screw that up from time to time. At least I know it when I do it.

That all adds up to Cooper, and Wilson, being pretty 'stellar' in my book.

Default Less than Stellar.....

Yep, BCB is right, it IS the barrels!

Look at this shotgun spread from one of my Coopers.....disgusting to say the least!

My others all seem to shoot just as bad. Can't a guy get a good factory barrel any more?

I had a chuckle when I read "Less than stellar Wilson barrels". When so many rifle, that use Wilson barrels shoot so well. I guess it is again, all in the eye of the beholder. Bill K

Guess I should drop the customs and go back to factory barrels.
