reloaded factory 17 Hornady Hornet ammo?
With component prices & availability (or lack of) the way it is, I thought about using the factory ammo (20gr VMax) as a starting point rather than forming from another case.
Does anyone know if the primer pockets need any special treatment prior to reloading? I thought I read about them being crimped.. but I don't recall where I saw that little tidbit of info.. is anyone reloading this brass? which dies are you using? where in the world are you finding those dies, etc? any favorite powders/bullet combinations? Alan. I have been reloading some factory Hornady ammo, not a problem with primer pockets, etc. No crimp, usually that is only with military ammo.
I am working with 20 grain Midsouth, v-max and z-max bullets and AA 1680 powder. Start around 10.8 and work up towards 11.8 and see what works in your rifle. Dies I ordered a set of the Hornady Custom dies. Bill K |

Not to contradict Bill...
But there is/ was primer pocket issues, and the Hornady rep I emailed said I should have no problems ( I gave him my lot numberr and told him it was a lower number than the "problem" ammo Alan in Ga's friend shot and had blown primers) and the tech replied also they fixed all the bad ammo by staking the ammo. So from that, I believe they did crimp ammo after they found several users had blown primers in factory 20 grain ammo. The Tech did say they would never sell dangerous ammo, and I should sell it or return it to whom I bought it from ( internet purchase) if I am uncomfortable with using the ammo. I hope I don't have any issues, but do have his word there is no existing problems, so if one blows I suspect he will be eating crow. I haven't shot mine yet, but tore down 1 round and the pocket measured no taper. They are supposed to be making a new run of ammo in several months, and offered some to replace the older lots with new ammo from the new batch. Hope this helps Allen Last edited by hemiallen; 07-24-2013 at 08:05 PM. |

Thanks Bill K & Allen -
I haven't fired my (Savage) rifle yet either - so far I've only been able to locate a couple boxes of the factory ammo -puchased in the last month, so it may be fine. However, I'll be sure to carefully inspect the results. Working on ordering dies, mount(s), rings, etc. Hopefully, I can have at least preliminary results before field testing on PD's in a couple months. |

I've only reloaded 100 rounds which had four different lot numbers, without any issues. Haven't seen any staked primers so far. Been picking up a box here and there since April. So I"m not sure where mine fits in with the bad batch of ammo. I'm using Hornady dies that I bought from Sincliar Inc. Checking their site, they are out, but do have RCBS in stock at the moment.

Load data from Western Powders is quite different as they list pressures. The Hornady case is rated at 50,000PSI so AA 1680 maxed out at 11.2 grains giving 3493fps and 49,657 PSI. At that rate the 12.0 grain load should do 3742 and develop 53,204 PSI. In light of the blown primers with the factory ammo it is quite likely that my 12.0 grain loadwould have done the same at 35 Cessius. To be safe AA 1680 at 11.2 should be max. AA 2200 is a better powder to use and safely delivers 3606 fps with the Nosler 20 Varmageddon . |

If only I had or could find some A2200! I would be curious how much of a change in psi primers make in this round.
