Having been following this thread and the "Cooper 38 Chamberings" thread I've concluded that I have the rarest model 38 of them all. It's a plain basic Classic model 38 in 22 Hornet that seems to follow the "rules" as laid out. It's a small lug rifle with a VR serial number prefix and the proper barrel markings. This things got to be rare.

I got mine new in 2001, when a guy who ordered it from the local shop backed out of the deal, and the dealer put it up for sale on the rack. It is a Model 38 Classic in 22 Hornet also. I remember when Cooper wanted to recall all of them to have their bolts replaced, but never I sent it in. I will have to go dig mine out to double check whether it is a small or larger lugs, now that the picture of the difference is available.

if you have a super early model of the Classic some of the barrels were stainless and the bolt release is on the right side like the CCM...

I finally had some time to do a little digging in the safe and wanted to add to the list based one what I have in my safe.

VK-Model 38 in 17 HeBee
2375-Model 38 in 20VT
R-180 Model 40 in 22 HNT
2013-Model 38 in 218 Mashburn Bee
6032-Model 38 in 17 Fireball(now 17/23SMC)
PVX600-Model 22 in 250-3000 AI

I have the opportunity to purchase a Model 22 in 22BR with serial PBX600

SST-005 Model 38 in 22 Squirrel
VX6-Model 38 in 22 Squirrel

I suspect I have One of the rarest, if not THE rarest of the 38’s.
Tom Thomas of the Outdoorsman in PA arranged to have 10 38’s done in 14 Walker Hornet, all with Lawrence barrels, 5 SS & 5 CM. I own #9 CM.
Beat that one.

Still have one of the earliest 17CCM’s, high gloss blue repeater.
Tom had a big stash of the good Fiocchi brass.

Tim does the 14 Walker Hornet have a letter at the start of the serial number?

The early 1994 model 21's I've had only had a single letter then the number ie A105 & EL3

It would be nice to know if the 14 Walker Hornet had a letter designation......Kiwi

VX6-Model 38 in 22 Squirrel
VW-Model 21 in 17 Squirrel
Some of those serial numbers follow the original caliber designations, I've highlighted the two I can see in blue.

I'm not sure of the ones I've highlighted in red, if they were built prior to mid 2005 the serial number should follow the letter designation.

A 2004 MTV in 243W has PUV xxx and a 2004 M21 Classic has VA xxx

Looking at the above, would the Model 22 have two letter serial number prefix's ie
PU 243 W
PV 250-3000AI
PB 22BR

It would be good if we could get some other members with Coopers built prior to 2006 to list the letters and calibers to see if we can piece together a full list.

The 250-3000AI I am lucky enough to have the factory target and it was built in 2001. I contacted Cooper about the 22BR and the response I got from them was "no information available". Also, I messed up and the SST-005 was a 22CCM....NOT a 22 Squirrel

Default Cooper Model 38

My Model 38 is a Montana Varminter in .22 Hornet. The receiver is stamped Cooper Arms; the barrel is stamped Cooper Firearms of Montana; Serial number VR78.
A letter from Cooper says the rifle was shipped July18, 2002.
