Question re: 17 hornet and IMR 4227
I am getting ragged one hole groups with the 15.5 Hornady NTX, seated at 1.171 and loading single shot in my CZ 527 American and like it. No pressure signs at all, however I want some opinions..
Most date show max load ( mostly Hornady) is 10.1 grain with the 20 grain bullets. I am at 11.2 grain and the load is slightly below the neck of the case. That is a grain over max, but as I said no sign of pressure and accuracy is super. This is with my temps right now running around 80 degrees, with sunny, clear weather. Should I stick with it and use it, as is, or lower the charge ? Seems safe, from all indications too me, but at the same time scary to be this far above what shows as a maximum load. Anyone else have experience with IMR 4227 in the 17 Hornet ? Bill K |

Your using a bullet that is only a little over 75% of the 20 grain bullet that your load calls for. Lighter bullet will make a big difference. It seems that your load is working, and you know what your fired cases look like pressure wise. If you are not showing signs of high pressure at 80 degrees, I would use the load. More powder with a lighter bullet, is common.

The 25 vmax load is .8grains below the 20vmax. Your 15.5 would probably be a similar jump.You probably .1-.3 grains over max so just keep an eye on the cases.

The PO Ackley book shows a load of 11.0-11.5 grs. Of 4227 using a 25 gr. Bullet.
I have been using 11.2 grs. of 4227 with the 15.5 gr. NTX and have been getting the same results you have—super accurate. Haven’t run it on the chrono but the same powder load with a 20 gr. Bullet is around 3700. Back when powder was hard to get tried 4227 based upon Ackley’s numbers and haven’t looked back. Works every bit as good as N120 and for less money. Bob |

Thanks guy for that info. Especially Parker's info. I feel much better now and not so spooky with this load. Will continue to use it, but will keep a eye on any signs of a pressure issue. I know it is really accurate in my CZ and it sure explodes the squeeks. Bill K

H4227 as well as IMR4227 both worked in the .17 Ackley Hornet and Ackley Bee with 20 and 25gr. bullets. There should be no problems with using it with lighter ones as well.

So many variables go into what MAX really is. First thing is weight of bullet. The fact that you are shooting a lighter bullet will make a difference what the pressures and potential MAX really is. On top of that, although I don't own a 17 Hornet, the OAL the book publishes will change pressures as well. If you are seating the bullet longer, then there is more case capacity which will lower the pressures. Almost every single rifle I own my COAL is longer then what book recommends. Therefore most of my loads are either at Max or even over MAX 99% of the time. Again, I'm chasing a node in my 17 Ack Hornet and trust me it's getting scary, but I still have ZERO pressure signs. So I have some more loads made up and just looking for a decent day to go test them. Just keep an eye on what you are using and you should be fine! |

Kinda the same deal with me, 20VarTarg. I stopped with my .17AH running 3,924fps with 20's and 3.,640fps with 25's. Those, for me, are working maximums
in my CZ with the long Pac-Nor barrel.

Without knowing actual velocity it is difficult to determine pressure.
FWIW QL does not show the 15.5 NTX but does show the 17 vmax and with the 17 and 11.1 grains of IMR4227 it shows 48K pressure which is 5K under pmax. So I would say the 15.5 bullet should have a shorter bearing surface and also less pressure. |
