17 squirrel action choices
With the CZ 527 being discontinued and the Cooper M38 almost impossible to find what other options are there? I’m looking for something small, light, and ideally easier to rebarrel than the CZ.
Thanks guys |

a tc is about all that is left. i rechambered a 17 hmr to 17 v-rapter, aka )17-5.7x28). 17 squirrel might be easier being it's a rimed case.

CZ 527 makes a very good 17 Squirrel. The CZs aint hard to rebarrel. I put the action in the lathe in a truing jig and cut the face of it square and make a shoulder on the barrel to lock up against the face of the action. I also cut the threads at 20 tpi instead of metric threads. Has always worked very well. CZ has messed up discontinuing the 527 centerfire and 452 rimfire series of rilfes my opinion.

17 sq action
If a singleshot will work I would build a Martini on a Cadet frame.

Light and handy?
Get a TC, they are perfect for a light woods carbine and quite accurate.

Would an 1885 falling block work?

I’ve been looking at the 527 for a while but it seems like prices have gone through the roof since they got discontinued. I’m still holding out hope on finding a M38. I’m not familiar with any of the TC stuff. I’ll have to look into that.

On my 17 Squirrel and 2 others I've been around, they have to be partly pushed into the chamber before closing the bolt on a CZ 527.

Why do they need to be pushed into the chamber? That’s the first I’ve heard about something like that.

I've used the Calhoon follower and tried just laying the case on top of the magazine. Not much difference. The short case tips at the feed ramp. My CZ barrels are coned too. I've polished the extractor etc. If you were thinking of feeding from the CZ magazine, good luck. If in a target rich squirrel patch it was just easier to position the case so bolt closed easy. Great round, barrels don't heat if shooting a lot.
