Custom 22

Looking to buy or build a new 22cal. Was considering a 223WSSM but not hearing good things about them. I want a rifle that will comfortably shoot a 60-80gr bullet at 3500-3800fps. Looking at long range coyote hunting. A wildcat would be acceptable as long as its not wild. Any ideas???

220 Swift Improved? 220 Rocket? 22-250 Improved? 22 Middlestead? Any of these or similar case capacity in a fast twist will give you what you're after.

22-250AI with a fast twist barrel. Dies will not break the bank. Wildcat but not crazy.

I have been looking at doing the same thing but in 6mm.I have been looking at the 6x47Lapua and a 6-250AI and a 6BR for long distance furballs

I use a 22-243 with a 1-8 Brux 28" barrel. It will drive 80gr'ers at those speeds easily and has put a healthy dent in the feral pig population on my place. Closest shots are 325yds+ with a lot at 4-500yds. Dies are cheap as I use a Redding 243 FL S series die and a Hornady 220 Swift seater, both which I already own. One pass with the FL die and shoot.

check out this Mike Bryant built custom 22-243. Owned by Justin Eakins of Canadian River Hilton Hunting Lodge; as his mother Mrs. Linda put the smack down on this monster muley.



Linda Eakins and her 2007 mule deer. The rifle used was Justin's Hart barreled .22-243 built on a Stiller Tac 30, McMillan Remington Varmint stock and Nightforce scope. Bullet used was a Sierra 80gr.


Justin uses this rifle to shoot everything from deer, hogs, coyotes, muleys, and anything that walks. This rifle is a tack-driver as Justin also competes in many of the coyote calling competitions while bringing home alot of $$$$.

I spoke to Mr Eakins several times about his set-up as I helped a friend build one just like it. (FYI - the CRH has been featured many times on the Outdoor Channel for its outstanding deer and turkey hunting)

Tell me more, Speeds, Powder, Case Capacity, this one is interesting. Ever think about improving it, as in Ackley.

I'm shooting RL22 in mine. Favorites are 75gr'ers @46.5grs and 80's @45.0grs. The 75's chrono at just short of 3900 and the 80's about 3700-3750, that from a 28" Brux barrel. I've thought about all the variants, ie Middlestead, AI and others but it's nice to be able to form brass and shoot, plus it feeds from a mag just like a 243. I'm in the process of a sporter build with a 27" #5 and one of Stillers TAC30 actions. At 2" high at a hundred I'm on the money at 300yds and only 5" low at 400. Brass is plentiful and cheap, dies are easy to put together without buying expensive custom dies, your not using up barrel life fireforming. After 1000 rounds I'll have that 28" barrel shortened to 26" and keep shooting it. What's not to like, I've got enough wildcats that take 2-4 caseforming steps, neck turning, fireforming, etc, it's nice to have a "form and take shooting" wildcat for once.

I've spent the last couple of days checking up on the different 22s and the so far the 22-243 is sounding pretty good. I've had a couple of rifles built by Stan Ware(sgrcustomrifles), and will start the ball rolling. I like the fact that I already have plenty of 243 brass. I assume necking these down will be a one step process, similar to 222rem mag down to 204 ruger. Are these cases improved or do they maintain the standard neck and shoulder angle. I'm sure Stan will be able to locate all the info, I'm just curious. Thanks for all the info and if there are any other ideas out there keep them coming, as this project probably won't start for a few months.
