Default Boys rifle for my boy

Nothing too fancy here but thought I'd share with you guys. I picked up a beater Remington model 41 at a gun show a couple years ago for not much and finally got to making it into a little rifle for my son. It's a single shot, manual cock, walnut stock, iron sights, ultra-basic .22 rifle.
The rifle wasn't really too bad to start with, some surface rust, stained and nasty smelling stock that was dented and scratched but nothing broken or missing. It shot pretty well in fact, I could knock down 12ga shells at 25 yds no sweat.
Started like this.

I did only light refinishing work by polishing all metal to 320 and 4 coats of cold blue. Cut down the stock and barrel, recrowned of course and refinished the stock with 4 coats of TruOil and a silly "skeleton" buttplate.

It came out with some nice wood and looks kind of good for a $40 .22 for a kid. Still need to sight it in but I think it will get a lot of use in the next few years.

Awesome Paul!! You are the best dad in the whole wide world!

Here just when I thought I was by making a NEF stock you do this!!! LOL

Very cool, and that will be a neat piece of history one day for one of your great great grandkids!

Hey if he ever needs to barrow a 17 HMR chipmunk I’d send it to ya for a while… we don’t use this one all that much.

Gots to agree with the others. That last picture is the best one. Mission accomplished.

Great Job, I did small rifles for my boys when they turned 6. I did mount fixed power scopes as it was easier to teach them to shoot. They later became very succesful smallbore shooters and hunters. They hunt only with single shots because that all they need. It started with rifles like this. I am collecting more fore Grand kids. If we want to keep our sport we need to bring new blood in all the time. This kid will never ever forget this rifle and what you have done for him.

Default Grandson's first TWO rifles,,,,,

I have one grandchild. He turned 4 last month.
He now owns [in my possession]a Slavia 618 .177 Pellet rifle,,,and a Winchester 68 single shot rifle that I cut/crowned to 21" barrel. I plan to mill a dovetail for the front sight and I have two Marbles rear open sights for him to select from when the time comes to where he knows what he wants.
For now I have a Weaver aluminum one piece base epoxied [working fine!] to the barrel and a 4X LEUPOLD Compact scope.
Pa Pa wants to start him out right. Grandsons shouldn't have to shoot cheap with cheap scopes.

You made that boy real happy . Someday he will hand it down to his kids with some hunting stories. Great job.

That was a good buy on the Remmy . We two at work for sale one Winchester and one Remington for 150.00 ea. I look the other way when I walk by them.
