Don't have a 17HH, but based on what you said, I would shoot it, and be very careful to check again when you have to change powder lot numbers to make sure.

I'm pretty sure the bearing surface is longer, as the 15.5 is quite long for its weight.

BC does not directly correlate to bearing surface.
If the bearing surface is that much longer than the 20gr... I sincerely doubt its shorter than the 17gr, as you previously stated. Last edited by orkan; 08-08-2019 at 03:11 PM. |

I just went and measured, bullet OAL as well as bearing surface, for a 15.5gr NTX, 17gr Vmax, 20gr Vmax, and 25gr Vmax. 15gr LF (OAL .579) (bearing surface .267) flat base bullet and is the bullet used in the 17 WSM rimfire ammo 15.5gr NTX (OAL .585) (bearing surface .274) boat tail bullet 17gr Vmax (OAL .533) (bearing surface .218) boat tail bullet and is the bullet used in the 17 HMR rimfire ammo 20gr Vmax (OAL .596) (bearing surface .281) flat base bullet 25gr Vmax (OAL .666) (bearing surface .360) flat base bullet Last edited by B23; 08-08-2019 at 05:47 PM. |

I listed the bc's only to point out how close they were to each other. I'm still of the opinion that load data for the 17 can be used safely with the 15.5.

And if the whole .17 cal Hornady bullets weren't confusing enough, I just went and pulled a bullet from a piece of 15gr lead free 17 WSM ammo.
I always kind of assumed these 15gr lead free bullets in the 17 WSM ammo were either the same or just a .5gr lighter version of the 15.5gr NTX they use in the 17 Hornet ammo, well, that would be an incorrect assumption because they are definitely NOT the same bullet. The 15gr LF bullet loaded in the 17 WSM ammo is a flat base bullet, not a BT bullet like they use in the 17 Hornet. If anyone cares to know, the measurements of this bullet are as follows. 15gr lead free (OAL .579) (bearing surface .267) flat base bullet |
