i don't know what a swirl finish is but i used to do a random scratch finish when i was in business. my customers liked it and it wasn't hard to do. polish the barrel. set the lathe to about 50 rpm. cover everything with old towels to protect from grit. put a 100 grit disc on an orbital sander. have the barrel spinning in the lathe and use the sander up and down the barrel until you get the pattern you like.

Swirly barrel finish
Dan Doweling (sp?) in Colo was one of the first to do this finish. Call it his swizzledick finish. Give him a call.
Or you could give shooter's#42 method a try, I don't think you can mess it up. Hal Last edited by Hal; 11-08-2020 at 02:02 PM. |

He did them with a file. Once down, once back, no huge trade secret.

Kevin Weaver did it on my 20 BR.

I have an old Shilen DGA with a Shilen barrel that Dowling did. Pretty work.

The secret??
Use a palm sander while “rocking” the barrel back- n- forth. I usually get help, like my wife to rock it, while I run the palm sander down the barrel.. The slower you run down the barrel, the squiggly the lines will be. Tape up the portions you don’t want disturbed.. I use regular masking tape- at least 2 wraps. Oh- gotta be 60-20 grit sand paper also... |
