Default Scope mount question for Sako L 461

Gentleman,
I recently purchased a L461 222 caliber with medium sako rings. Upon attempting to mount the scope, a new style Weaver Grand Slam, I did not have clearance between the objective and the barrel or clearance for the bolt to operate. Questions; (1) what scope has any one been able to mount in medium rings (2) does anyone have a set of high rings that they would part with.

Thought you said that was .223.
Hey, contact Optic's Planet, I put one of those huge 55's with the big
bell housing on mine. Had to get the xtra high set. Come look and measure them.
Seeing those mounts on your gun the other night I half expected this.

I had the same problem; I installed an old Leupold M8 6x and it fits perfectly.

Default rings

A set of the vintage highs will run you 150.00, at least that's what I sold my last 2 sets for. I would sell the mediums, buy a set of Leupolds and pocket the difference.

Lynn:

I just measured mine.
These three big scopes I got last fall you looked at with me
the front bell measures a full 2 1/2", I think they're rated 55mm glass.
The housing is much larger is what I ran into.
Near as I can measure the height on the rings from base to bottom of
scope is .675", nearly .7". The front housing clears the barrel by about an 1/8".

Seems like they cost about $60 from Optics Planet. I can ask Jack and he put them on his card as I couldn't connect with them. I think they're Bushnel. or Leupolds I can dig for the papers.

You're welcome to come inspect them anytime. I really wouldn't be opposed to taking them off for you to try on your gun even with my glass until you get a set that's right for your setup. I'll be here all day Sunday.

Rider, I am sitting in Changi Airport in Singapore so cannot just run downstairs to check but I have had. Weaver 6-20x40 Grand Slam on my l461 and I used a set of Aussie made bridge mounts and it fitted perfectly. I am sure this mount design was sold to Tasco so a Set of Tasco mounts should work for you.

Leupold mediums will work with many scopes(but not all) with a 40mm objective lens without an AO. If they have an AO you will need Highs. Highs will fit some 50mm Obj scopes, but not all. Their extra highs will fit almost everything. The Leupold site gives the height of their ringmounts from top of dovetail to center of scope so measure what you need & order accordingly. From a cost & quality standpoint, Leupold is your best option. The new Sako "Opti-Lok" ringmounts & base/ring systems would be my second option, but their height options are confusing & need careful consideration when purchasing.

I've got four L461s and have mounted a variety of scopes up to 50mm on them but can't recall specific combos. A lot depends on the barrel taper when you are trying to keep it low. I think I have an extra set of Leupold highs and maybe a set of Sako highs, might be others too. If you are interested, shoot me a pm.
