no advantage
Theirs no real advantage especially if your a handloader as you can duplicate the lesser fireball velocity.Unless of course you would like anouther rifle. Frank C.

It takes less powder and you can make brass from 223. Super little cartridge.

OR...............You could look at the .222 and use better brass and get more velocity to boot.......

You need a one on one with Doug in Montana.
He can help you understand why you need this rifle. Is it a CZ or Remington classic? A couple hot numbers. Kenny

Great liitle cartridge, I have a pair of them.
For me it's got nothing to do with loading down a 223 or shooting a 222 to get more velocity or using better brass. For me it's owning a 221 and shooting a 221, plain and simple. If we down loaded everything, or chose to shoot something else for more velocity...... There wouldn't be much of a need for this site. |

Great little cartridge that is more alive today because of the improvements in powder and projectiles than when it was developed. Also a heckuva little case to build off of as evidenced by the 20 VarTarg and 17 Fireball! with todays powders I'm not sure it gives up a lot to the old GREAT 222Rem. is it up there with the 223? Maybe not in the upper limits of velocity achieved but accuracy will be there at a modest reduction to the 223 velocities. My thoughts on you getting the rifle, if it's a good deal and the model you are taking about (VSSF) is a good production model with the longer barrel, I'd say go for it and just have another great "little guy" in the gun safe. Do I still own one? No. Reason is I have entirely too many varminters here for the number of potential targets available and I do have the 17 version a 204 and 2 different 222Mags so it just didn't get shot enough to warrant keeping since there was something else I had my eyes on, and needed the cash for that little event! Mostly it's one of a shooters desires to own another rifle.
Mine's a .20VT and turns over 3700fps w/32gr & 18.0 gr powder

I'm with Furhunter, it is what it is and that's enough. I had an original XP100 and always thought, "this would sure be a neat round in a rifle". I was right . Mine is a CZ but I have a VSF Remington in .17 Fireball and sure like the rifle. Sounds like a great combo!
Be sure and take a run at loading AA1680 under a 40 grain V-Max, that combo'll make ya giggle . Actually anything on a .221 case is a must have. A guy needs a .221 a .20 VarTarg and a .17 Fireball really, like Momma bear, Papa bear, and the little baby bear, what a nice family .
