Default Need Help With New Build!

Hi All,

Sometime back I requested suggestions for a build on a Mini Mouser action, I got a lot of very good ideas and thought that I had settled on the 20 tactical. NOW I find that I am really interested in the 20-222 and have a few doubts that I know you all can help me with.

First of all, the barrel I have is a 12.5 twist, I am concerned over the bullets that I may be able to shoot with this twist. I am in California and soon will be able to use only lead-free bullets, lead free bullets tend to be long for weight so am worried the twist will be too slow. What do you all think?

Secondly, I will not be doing the work myself as the metric threads on the action and barrel cannot be done on my lathe, the shop that will do the work does not have a reamer so I will need to buy, rent or borrow a 20-222 reamer. Anyone here have one available?

Finally, I would like suggestions on dies, loads, bullets and anything else that may make this build easier.

As always, I look forward to your replies and thank you all in advance for the help!

I'm still a few weeks out from having my 20-222 done but I bought a Redding 222 Type S FL bushing die and a Redding 222 Comp seater die. I'll be using Lapua 222 brass necked down to .20 cal with whatever bushing ends up giving me around 1 thou neck tension. The reamer my gunsmith is using will be a no turn neck for Lapua brass reamer.

Once it's finished, my first load development will be with 35gr Bergers, H322, and 205M's to light things off.

I know Nosler makes a 32gr lead free .20 cal bullet as well as Hornady has their 24gr NTX .20 cal bullet which is also a lead free.

My 2¢: You'll be in experimental mode with a 12.5 twist out of a .222 case. Your call if you want to go to the expense of a reamer and smithing costs to see if it will work.

I agree, that 12.5tw will be really limiting.

I'd definitely put a call in to Hornady and Nosler to confirm what bullets will stabilize in a 12.5tw before I spent any money having it chambered.

I went with an 11tw for my 20-222 build.

Well that is what I thought re: the twist rate, oh well.

I also have an octagon barrel in 17 caliber with a 9 twist, I guess I could go with a 17-222? How much more difficult would that be and what weight bullets could I shoot with it?

Anyone running a 17-222? If so, what can you tell me about it?

Thanks for your answers so far, even if it is not what I wanted to hear!

Default 17/222

17/222 CZ 527 with 9 twist Lilja barrel shoots 30 grain FBHP Bergers into .5” groups at 3,900 fps. It also shoots 20 grain and 25 grain bullets of various makes very well.

In a 17-222, what will you use for lead free bullets though?

I'm someone makes a LF .172 bullet but your options may be very limited.

CA is too big a market to ignore. Some manufacturer(s) will jump in to fill the void.

Save your 12.5 twist barrel for your next 20 cal build, you will do one get onto Pacnor and get them to chamber and thread a 1-11 twist barrel for your Mini Mauser 20-222, I had a Mini Mauser Zastava built a few years ago, I imported one of their pre chambered/threaded barrels and the thing shoots outstandingly well.

Thanks for all of your replies, I have decided to wait a little bit to see what becomes available in the "lead free" bullets. Worse comes to worse, I have a fast twist .224 barrel and I can always use another "triple deuce" or maybe a 224 Val.

Thanks again,
