Looking for Wood Source
Hi All,
I am in the process of trying to finish up some of the projects that I have put aside over the years. I am working on a Martini Cadet in 222R and need a piece of wood for the fore-end. I am attaching a photo of the butt stock and would like to match the color, if possible, not necessarily the figure. Anyone know where I might be able to find a small piece of Walnut (12"X2"X2") to make the fore end? Thanks for any and all help, Marcos (elalto) Last edited by elalto; 05-08-2019 at 08:40 PM. |

Nice Wood
Most of my figured walnut are flat boards. That sure looks like Claro Walnut. How big of a block of wood are you looking for?
There are any number of specialty wood suppliers that offer great product. Most notably is Cooks Wood www.cookwoods.com/ - not cheap but perhaps the best wood inventory. Big Monk Lumber Company www.bigmonklumber.com - this is a sleeper, but always am impressed. Big Monk specializes in wood turning, but they carry some larger blocks that will fit your needs and their prices are hard to beat. You might also consider checking Ebay … I bought some nice pieces for turning. Use key words like "Wood, fancy, figured, etc" and then enjoy the ride. I had an English Walnut taken down last year but I saved some of the stump wood which was Black Walnut. I slabbed some of it out with my chainsaw and have it had drying in my garage all year. I can run a little of it through the jointer to see what's there if you're interested. The burl is still in the ground and is about 44" in diameter but I can't find anyone to come take it out. If the slabs are workable you can have some. Randy.

Hearne's Hardwoods, Brian and his father are hunters. They should be able to fix you up. Their place is like a wood worker's toy shop.

Hearne... nice. Totally overlooked them.
I dream about winning the lottery and using some of the funds to build a sawmill / brewery somewhere near a Austin. With my own little shooting gallery. Maybe a blacksmith shed as well. |

Thanks a lot y'all. I checked with some of your suggested places and have a piece on the way!

I see you already have a piece of walnut coming. I replied earlier that I had some black walnut slabs in the shop so I put one of the smaller pieces through the planer to see what I had. It's a good size piece but it's the smallest piece I have. It's about 3-1/2" thick with some nice curl (figure) in it. I wiped the surface with water before taking the picture. I can email you a photo as I can't seem to figure out how to attach a photo here. Randy.
