I would have agreed with your sentiments about the 44 mag... until I got a 16” 45/70 barrel

Nice pic.

Sure looks like that scope is hanging on petty hard.

The little 20 in a 14-15 hand gun is great combo. I just finished building a 20 SCC ( a 20 Var Targ on steroids) in a 15' barrel for my 100 XPR and its a jewell. Don't seem to have the muzzle blast of my 10' 221 FB, Shot over 300 PD's in Montana and a couple were over 400 yards. The 20 make a sweet hand gun caliber in my mind. Good shooting, Rick

I have a 20 VT and 223 in an SP and really like them both. The VT is by far my favorite. I've got muzzle brakes on both of them, not needed, but it does allow me to see my hits through the scope with the VT. I also use rifle scopes on each.

Thanks for the last couple of replies. Seems that this thread got a little off topic with big bore recoil comparison.
If I lean towards ordering a barrel it would probably be in 20VT or depending on the cost of dies a 20 Bee variant.
I was just curious about the 204 Ruger in a short barrel. As there always seems to one for sale on the auction sites.
My current line up of barrels are in 17 cal (4) and 24 cal (5) and the only 22 cal barrel I have is a 10" 22 Hornet.

Thanks again, Mike

Mike: I feel that the 204R, no matter how good a cartridge it is, is a little too much in recoil and muzzle blast for a handgun.
And, I am guessing, the loss of FPS, etc. in the shorter barrel would make the 20 VT a much better choice.
That VT round will do as well and be a lot more of a pleasure to shoot accurately in the handgun set up also.
I have a TC .223 barrel, super 14, that, in time, will become either a 20VT or a 20SCC (Improved 40 degree shoulder-20VT) Bill K
