Tom,

From CCI website on the #41 primer.

* Mil-spec sensitivity
* Initiator mix optimized for ball/spherical propellants
* Available in large (No.34) and small (No. 41) rifle
* Use the same data as CCI Magnum primers

USAGE:

* Military-style semi-automatic rifles

Default Wolf SRM primers

I am the new guy on the block to the 204 Ruger, but I've been reloading for 55 years.

I have been using the Wolf LR primers and SRM primers exclusively in my F-Class rifles for years now as the ES's are smaller than any other primer I have tested and groups are as good or better than other primers.

But I keep noticing that the 204 loads reported are pretty much using the Rem 7 1/2 primers exclusively. I have a bunch of these so that is not the problem, just wondering whether anyone has used the Wolf SRM primers in the 304 and what success they have had.\

I nearing the end of finding a load for my gun but am just now loading some Wolf SRM to see how they do.

Does anyone know where this fine chart come from?

I have searched for a similar chart for pistol primers, especially cup thickness is of interest. But so far no Google luck.

Try here:

http://www.jamescalhoon.com/

The menu on the left side at the bottom of the website - look at 'Informative Articles' or something like that.

The article was called 'Primers and Pressure'. (First Printed in Varmint Hunter Magazine, October, 1995)

There is a brief mention in the text but i suspect that all small pistol and large pistol primers are not created equal.

I would say that no one is really worried about the strength of a pistol primer because they are running at such a low pressure compared to rifles. I can say that the material that they are made from makes a lot of difference, from the chart one would assume that the 7 1/2's and CCI450's were equal in strength, but in real life the 450's and BR 4's are much stronger or harder than the 7 1/2's are, loads that pierce a primer in my 17-204 look perfect if I am using the 450's. Default Sellier & Bellot primers in the 17HH

At 22 bucks/1000 they were good enough for loading 223 for my son's spray and pray AR15 so I tried them in other rifles I own with good results. I'm on my third brick and had zero problems so far.
I had most of yesterday to play with the new 527A 17HH and found out a few things:

First, the REM 6 1/2 primers pierced when I approached max loading on 4227 and 1680. I even pierced one using 11.8 gr of H4198. This surprised me as they have always been my go to primer in my 527A 222REM with never a problem.

Second, BR-4 primers are very consistent velocity wise but showed no difference on the target compared to the much cheaper SB primers.

Third, the Midsouth bulk 20gr HP bullets do well with 4227 and the 20gr Vmax prefers 1680.

Lastly, the off the shelf Hornady 20gr Vmax ammo is accurate but velocity 10' in from the the muzzle measures anywhere from 3,500-3,700 FPS with the faster loads showing a bulge ring on the outside of the case. In a case I cut in half I can see why this happens. The radius between the base of the brass and the sidewalls is very tight. One random cartridge got pulled and I found 12.0 grs of what looks just like 1680. 12gr of 1680 produces a velocity of around 3,600 with the vmax in my rifle.

I will continue testing different primers to see if I can tighten up the groups more.
