Hornady .17 cal 25gr VMAX in my 17H Hornet
On the completion of my third attempt to get the 25gr VMAX to stabilize in my CZ 17H Hornet. I have failed.
I looked at the JBM stabilizer app and at full bullet length, it won't stabilize. I took a bullet and cut the tip off. I measured the bullet and the tip separately. When I load the bullet length and the tip length into the JBM app, it shows it will stabilize in a 9tw barrel. Reality has proven that it will not stabilize in my CZ 527V Bullets that shoot as expected (superbly): MidSouth Nightmare 20gr HP, Midway Dogtown 20 HP, Barnes Varmegeddon 20gr Tipped, Barnes Varmegeddon 20gr HP, Hornady VMAX 20gr, Hornady Varmint 25gr HP, and Berger 25gr Varmint HP. Bullets that won't shoot (> 3" groups at 100): Hornady 25gr VMAX. I have noticed that Hornady does not offer a factory load for the 17H Hornet using the 25gr VMAX. I suspect they already knew what I have just proved to myself. I am ready to state that the 25gr Hornady VMAX will NOT stabilize in my CZ-527 with 9tw factory barrel. This is at velocities up to 3258 fps. Has anyone else had success with the 25gr VMAX in a 9tw barrel? v/r rch Last edited by rhouser; 10-29-2017 at 01:17 PM. |

I have very good results with 25grn Vmax in my 17HH 24" 9 twist barrel, out to 405yds , My CZ 527V shoots all bullets very well 20grn 25grn and even the 30Grn Bergers.
But i mainly shoot 25Vmax with 11.9grn Lovex DO63 (AA1680), I do seat them longer than the Hornady book says. |

Mark527Varmint, I am using the CFE BLK which is one step from the 1680 on the 15/16 Powder Chart from Hodgdon.
I am loading to 1.480 using the .17 insert on my Stoney Point comparator. This equates to about 1.789" using a Starrett digital caliper. My last attempt chronographed 5 shots as follows: MIN: 3216, MAX: 3295, AVG: 3258, SD: 29.3, ED: 79. The Accurate Powder book show 1680 for a 25gr VMAX to MAX Load of 10gr with a Velocity of 2,983. This is with an OAL of 1.711. The book load is using a WIN WSR primer and shot out of a 10tw 24" Barrel. Your load is up 1.9gr over the recommended 10gr "book" max for A-1680 in the 17HH with the 25gr VMAX. I have no problem with that after 50 years of reloading. Can you give me the COL you are using and a muzzle or 10' (chrony) velocity? I suspect you may be north of my 3258 fps. It would take very little encouragement to get me to try again. I would just need a target velocity and COL for a working version. I am a little cautious since I blew the extractor off my SAKO 243AI during load development of a "top limit" for w-760. Thanks to all who make this forum great. rch |

QuickLoad shows Lovex DO63 as being quite a bit faster than AA1680 and 11.9gr with a 25 Vmax shows as being over 72,000 PSI load, even stretched out to a COAL of 1.860.

YMMV but if I can't get a bullet to shoot well the first time to the range, it goes in the "use for another rifle" bin. There's too many out there that WILL shoot good to waste time, money and effort (hair) trying. Again, YMMV.

I must say, my CZ 527 Varmint likes the 25 grain VMax. I am able to achieve .5" accuracy using AA2200, CCI 400 primers in Hornady brass. I used the saami length so I don't create any feeding issues since I use the magazine. Worked up the loads in 90 degree heat with no pressure issues. Have shot over 500 this week in MT on pasture poodles with no complaints (except when the wind blows).

Send the rifle back to CZ as it should shoot 25 grain bullets better than that

Remove the ballistic tips and see how they shoot, you might solve your problem.

Jeremy(WI), I have a great load for the Berger 25 and the Hornady Varmint HP 25. Both will shoot 5 shot groups in the .4's (not adjusted for the bullet diameter, but, edge to edge). All the 20's shoot very tight groups. The only problem bullet so far is the 25 Hornady.
Jaybird, I may just move the bullet back to the SAAMI. I went though something like this with the VMAX in .223. It wanted a jump. Hog Patrol, I am with you. If it won't work, use the other nine bullets that will. Anybody else notice that Hornady does not offer a commercial 17HH 25gr VMAX load? rch |

I wonder if the reason they don’t is so many people just want the higher velocity loads. The factory 25hp sure smacked the crap out of the grass rats. I really want to try the 25 Vmax also. I have A1680,A2200 and cfe blk to try. A2200 on paper looks like the best to me.
