20 Tac vs 20-223ai
Tac is slightly shorter from base to shoulder and 30 degree's, 20-223ai slightly longer base to shoulder and a 40 degree. Both cartridges are very close in FPS, with the 20-223ai doing every so slightly more.
I shoot both and like them both, but find I shoot the 20-223ai more. can not give you a real reason, just like the sharper shoulder, I guess, better. Kindlers "The Terrific Twenties" have full measurements on the Tac. You can google the 20-223ai, and/or others will chime in with the actual measurements Bill K |

20-223-ai 40
Bill is spot on and the reason I made a 20-223 AI 40* is because when you load hundreds of them for Pdog shooting it saves a lot of trimming, I shoot them one at a time.
Bill would likely know more about feeding them out of a magazine. Two considerations, magazine feeding and cost of Dies. good luck sgtg PS; I shoot 28.2 grns of CFE in my 20-223-AI and 29.2 CFE in 204 Ruger 40 Vmax Last edited by sgtg; 05-31-2018 at 02:33 PM. |

Is there any advantage with the 20-223ai in using brass that was fireformed in a 223 ai? In other words, I am looking to build a .20 caliber that I can either start with new 223 brass or use fireformed 223 ai brass. Would the 20-223ai fit this bill better? I want to stick with 223 brass.

20 Tac vs 20-223ai
Quote:
I would not foresee any problem. And too add to one point, mention in another post/comment, I have had no feeding issues with the 20-223ai feeding in my Rem 700 action. Bill K |

One thing the 20 Tac does not have is all the neat PO Ackley history. I understand that is meaningless to some. I find it interesting, myself.
Just to muddy it up.... I have read that of all the AI cartridges, Mr. Ackley himself felt that the .223 benefitted the LEAST from the conversion. I have no idea how taking it down to 20 caliber would correlate to what he said about the original .223 AI. Still, I like the history and would not let silly facts influence my decision! |

I have an impressive list of "benefits" I conjured up myself to justify each AI I've built over the years. I'll admit it's mostly a feel-good list for me, but every one I've built has shot lights out, even my .338-06AI which shoots almost as good as a varmint rifle. But my favorite is my 7mm-08AI, that amazes me with every bullet weight suitable for caliber. In Ackley's book, he mentions that the 7-08 was the most efficient, and thereby his favorite of all his AI conversions. That was enough for me to build one. But to stay on topic, my 223AI has left the building, but only because it does not go out for PD's any longer. I've got rat rifles galore for the squirrels here, but will say for the record that it was my all-time favorite PD rifle. Excellent caliber!

I have to also put my 2 cents in for the 20-223AI. I am always impressed with the performance of the 39 gr BK in the little Ackley. H4895 gives me more than 4,000 FPS and with the performance of the Blitz King it’s a real winner on dogs. When I started shooting the 20-223 AI lost interest in my Tac 20 and sold her last year. Now that I think about it not really sure why, I guess it was the 20-223 AI maybe just did everything a little bit better. Both are great little 20’s.
