Default What caliber for a spare action

Well I ripped apart one of my rifles and decided to give my 20 tac a face lift and it’s now in the works as a full custom. This now leaves me with a spare Remington 700 223 bolt face action and unsure what caliber to build on it.

Current line up entails;

-20 tac 1:11 twist
- 20 tac 1:10 twist
- 223 1:8 twist
-6 creed 1:7 twist

And a 6 bra will be joining the line up shortly.

I’m unsure what to use this action for, have spare stock, bottom metal, snd trigger laying around just need a barrel and caliber to choose. I’m looking at something for coyotes/pests. Preferably fur friendly. Easy to load, nothing to hard to make brass for. Maybe a 17 or a different 20

17-222 Lilja or PacNor 9tw would make for a sweet little setup. Neck down Lapua 222 brass in a couple steps with a Redding 222 bushing die, load and go have fun.

You could also do a 17-223 just as easy but sometimes those little 17's can be powder fowlers so I'd probably opt for the smaller case and do a 17-222.

For that size bolt face you have the 20's pretty well covered but if another 20 is what you wanted, for me, it would be the same two I'd pick from, either a 20-222 or 20-223 AKA 20 Practical.

Trade or open up your boltface to .473 and do a 20BRAI,
would be a great long range 20 for yotes with a 9 twist with Berger 55's or Badger Bob's 46.5 or 55's

Opening up the bolt face and installing a new extractor would definitely expand the list of potentials but wouldn't you also need to do so work to the feed rails if you jumped up to one of the fatty cases like something off the BR?

22 Dasher would probably be pretty sweet or something off of the Creedmoor case or a necked down something off the 6.5x47 Lapua case. Possibilities are nearly endless.

Not sure, I load all mine single shot.
I'm betting a center feed of some kind would work if you wanted a repeater.

I didn’t want to invest a bunch of money into the build as I had all the parts but the barrel so was hoping to keep with a smaller case. I have a few more builds on customs that will fill the larger caliber void. I just didn’t want to waste an action sitting there. That’s why I was thinking a lighter weight varmint build in 17-22 cal

- 17 rem,
- 17 fireball
- 17-222, 17-222ai
- 204
- 20-222
- 222
- 223 ai

You would never regret either the 17 fireball or 20-222 .

Everyone needs to have at least one 223 AI in the quiver. Mine is 8 twist and keeps me entertained very well......

You've pretty much got the 20's covered with the TAC without stepping up to a BR case variant.
I would do a 9 twist 17 cal on the 222 or 223 case unless you can find a bunch of Fireball or Rem brass.
