Question 17VHA a flyweight TC build

Help,

Does anybody know a really good shop to have a barrel turned down to a feather weight profile.

I bought a relatively thin barrel in the white, 0.710" breech to a 0.550" muzzle, 24" length.

Help? What is a reasonable cost for profiling? Who would you use to make one like this (0.710" first 2.75" 0.600 at 5" straight taper to o.410" at 18" at muzzle?

Please advise, I have a nice clean new reamer and I want to know should I profile the barrel first, or should I rough chamber it first?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Hutch in ATX

What action are you planning to use this barrel on? It says TC but 710 is a little small for a Contender unless you plan to do a stub.

Thumbs up stub barrel, yes

The barrel will be a stub, it will be turned down to 0.700 or 0.690 for three inches and fitted.

Sounds like an interesting project. What do you have in mind for use of this rifle?

Question costs...

I now have my 17VHA barrel, my reamer came, it is now chambered.

What is a reasonable fee for boring out a T.C. Contender barrel to be a stub? It started life as a 22LR. and will need a 0.690" to 0.700" bore for 4" I just want it smooth bored to slip fit the barrel in it, the barrel will be locked into place by the dovetailed forend, four sight rail screws up top, and a 80° shoulder of 0.06" on the barrel inserted into the stubb, possibly including the use of a Savage style barrel nut.

I have done about 50 H&R stubs, I have never chambered the barrel first. Sounds like a very complicated project to me. When I do a H&R with someone's parts I usually charge about $150 which includes parkerizing the finished barrel. Larry

Question 17vha build project complete

So, a really nice guy did the work, it shoots, and I like the results. (Larry)

20 yards is my current max range from the patio to the spot up the hill where the raiding squirrels bury their pecan and acorn treasure.

Light barrel, 16.25" weight 12ounces.

Heavy barrel, 18.75" weight, 18.5 ounces.

Long barrel, 5 lbs 12 ounces with scope and bipod (Leopold 2 - 7 x 28mm, 8 ounce)

Short barrel 5 lbs 5 1/2 ounces with scope. (Leopold 2-7x28mm 8 ounce)

Does anyone have Quickload ? If so, could you run the numbers on 12.5 grains case capacity, IMR700x 2.0 grs, 2.2 grs, 2.4 grs, 2.6 grs, 17gr vmax on the lands, Rem 7.5 SR primer, 1 in 9 inch twist 16 .25 inch barrel.

I'm looking for pressures under 24,000psi. Do any of these go over 24k psi?

Do you mean to insert the barrel from the breech end of the stub?

Pics would be worth several thousand words in this thread.

Interesting project.

REDMANS BARREL LINERS ARE NOT DESIGNED, OR INTENDED FOR THIS USE AND ARE NOT TESTED AS SAFE FOR THIS APPLICATION. REPEAT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

DO NOT EXTRAPOLATE MY LOAD DATA TO YOUR FIREARM.

A photo is posted below at the bottom.

17gr VMAX 2.0gr IMR700X REM 7.5SR primer
17gr VMAX 2.2gr IMR700X REM 7.5SR primer

20gr xtp 2.0gr IMR700X REM 7.5SR primer
20gr xtp 2.2gr IMR700X REM 7.5SR primer

25gr HNDY HP hmr 2.0gr IMR700X REM 7.5 SR primer, safe

All of those landed on the same dime sized spot on a tree limb about 20 yards away. I tried 4 of each. I never needed to resize brass, or neck.

The chamber is extremely tight, as is the neck.

Pop out primer, clean case, prime, pour powder, press bullet with gentle finger pressure right on top, check for runout, none obvious. Chamber, extract, check for rifling engagement in throat / leade. All loads have a tiny touch of the leade into the lands.

Rechamber, aim cock, fire. Two cases went through this process for 10 rounds each.

DO NOT EXTRAPOLATE MY DATA TO YOUR FIREARM.
Liner was lapped into a slip fit with zero wiggle room, when warm, it didn't fit, when chilled it barely fitted.

It was outside turned to about 0.295" for 0.985" of the breech, then coated with blue loctite, and while COLD rammed home from the muzzle until it protruded from the breech.

If you do this, remember to plug the breech of the liner with hard wax.

Plug removed, reamed it for my 17VHA.

20 loads later, no liner movement, head space is constant. Shoots into a bug at 10 and 20 yards, and that is plenty good enough right now for backyard squirrels.
