Default Backyard buck

Didn't see much this morning but but did see enough. This guy came cruising thru about 6:55AM and I talked myself out of shooting him twice, but the way it all played out, I just HAD to. I used the "can" to get his attention, he took his time, made a scrape and walked thru the "gauntlet" trail I created just for this situation. He was obscured enough for me to stand and draw. He stepped out and I released. He tried to duck it and I caught him just a bit high in the spine and he dropped. Another arrow in him put the lights out quickly. Tough to do on a thrashing deer! No blood trailing this one. If my 4 wheeler batter wasn't dead, I could have driven right to him. Had to drag it 40 yards to get the lawn tractor to him. Had him skinned out hanging in the shed by 8AM and back to work by 8:30. I figure he's a good 3.5 y.o. 7 pt. Not my biggest but it filled a tag and the freezer. I saw another one, similar to this, last night. Left him go. I kicked myself for doing it, but that doesn't matter now. Actually glad I did shoot this one from a management standpoint. The other one had better genetic potential if he makes it another year. I don't think this one would have amounted to much.

I knew I would kill this morning, just to make it a rush to get to my meeting. LOL

Charlie

IMHO, anything with a bow is a trophy. Same goes for a revolver.

In the mid 80's through the 90's I was fortunate to have access to a little over 4 square miles all property butted up to each other. The guys didn't hunt. Tough to cull back then as only one deer per year. We had a pretty good bunch of bucks, getting bigger every year.
Then it happened. Got the stool kicked out from under us, so to speak. We did very little as far as food plots. Mowing down a grassy area and throwing out some clover seed or planting oats in the spring or wheat in the fall was about it.
We did do a lot of mineral source offerings, free choice to the critters. I worked with a biologist a fair bit and his input worked in our area very well. I honestly believe big horns are a result of good mineral source as much as genetics to a point.

When four of us got thrown aside, we grabbed all our mineral feeders and stands and left. About 10-15 years of work, all shot to heck in 12 days. I saw all the bucks taken. 14 guys took 14 bucks.
The next year was as bad almost. Who am I to complain, I didn't pay the taxes on the place nor rent it. It was all on good faith. I did work a lot of your fixing fence, moving calves, and hauling grain.
They did notice they were short a "free" part time weekend employee. Called me wanting help, I am always busy.

So if you have a place to worry about culling, I am happy for you. Me, never could make the horns palatable, boiled, baked or fried;-).

JSH, I have 7 acres. Nothing I can control at all, other than myself. I'm lucky to have some ground around me that doesn't get hunted hard, and some neighbors who are into QDM. There's some great bucks around. Not your KS 170's. A big one here may go 140-150". But you have to let off those young deer. I saw a lot of deer that appear to have better genetics than this one, that were a lot younger. I'm fortunate I can sort of be selective.

Congratulations on the nice buck Charlie,
Looks like you’ll have plenty in the freezer. I found out again earlier this fall, do not shoot a deer that is looking at you with a bow, I came on some doe while going to my stand a few weeks back and decided to take a shot on a doe, she was quicker than the arrow.
Did you do any good down on the Eastern Shore?
Stan
