17 Caliber and Sonic Boom
My shooting partner uses a 17 HMR on PD's working through a town after he has finished with his 223. He is able to shoot several from each setup without spooking the ones in the immediate area.
He thinks this is because the 17 HMR has a low report and minimal sonic boom. I use a 20VT for most of my shooting and find that there is little difference between it and 223 regarding spooking PD's. Do those of you shooting 17 AH, 17 FB, or other small 17's feel you spook the PD's less with the 17 's??

I've not had as much experience as many here, but I feel it is all related to sonic boom/muzzle velocity. A 17 HMR has much less report than a 17 FB or 17 Rem. Don't have a 17HH or 17 AH, but to me, a 22 Hornet is quieter than the 17FB \or 17 Rem.

17 caliber and sonic boom
The HMR is quieter than the others and therefore critters are not so spooked, as you say, by it's report.
As for the 17 Fireball and 20 SCC, I shoot mostly on them, for longer range, I can not really tell the difference between them as to report and them spooking faster with one over the other. You hit close to one or take one out, and any close by notice and will twitch, duck or head for cover. Bill K |

I shoot more ghogs than pdogs but since I started using a can I hear the crack of the bullet rather than the boom. I have noticed that they don't go down after a shot (except the one I shot) but they often times sit up and look around as if to see what the sound was. My17fb and 17hmr are not threaded and the 17 fb did cause pdogs to go down after a shot more so than the 17hmr. The only barrels I have threaded are 20vt, 223 bolt gun and 223 AR. The AR is the loudest but did not spook pdogs very much with the can on.

As I recall, the effectiveness of a suppressor is because it is harder to locate the source of the report with a suppressor. That includes both animals and people. That is why the PDs would perk up, trying to locate the source.

Sonic boom
I shoot quite a few PDs and have for 20+ years. Sold my 17 hmr after one trip, too many “crawl offs”. However, I was using a hp bullet and may have had a better experience with plastic tip bullets.
The 17HMR was noticeably quieter than centerfire cartridges whether they be 17, 20, or 22. In my view there is a little difference in spooking prairie dogs as you move up the power spectrum, but that has never been a driver for what cartridge I am using. Most of the time, I have a 200 yard or less rifle and a longer range rifle on the bench. Generally I kill what I can with the short range gun, then switch to the longer range gun. |

Thank you all for the replies.
Seems like the consensus is that the center fire 17's all seem to spook the PD's significantly more than the 17HMR. I use a can on my 223 but rarely use that rifle, preferring the VT for most work. Now that I think more about it, it seems that I've had longer shooting sessions using the 223 with the can than the VT with out it. I'll guess I'll just have to thread the VT for the can. I really would like to build a 17 FB Short that would use about the same powder as a 17AH......but you may be able to achieve the same result by merely downloading the 17 FB.

I have tried down loading my 17fb but it kind of defeats the purpose of getting a fireball in the first place.

fox hunter did his 17 viper (a shortened 17 fireball with a long neck) then a few have been playing with 17 TCM's I think. |
