Default Sako extracter

Prior to checking with my gunsmith, has anyone had a sako extractor put into their Howa 1500 bolt ? If so how did it work compared to the light/small original one, Howa uses ? This would be on a 223 face. Bill K

Hold the phone! Why in the world would you replace the Howa extractor which is basicly a M16/pinned style extractor with a Sako extractor????

The M16/pinned style extractor is about as good and safe as you can get.

Was wondering the same. One of the clear advantages of a Howa is their extractor. Is this on a mini-Howa maybe? Has it changed from their full size?

I get some slip overs on occasion, that the fired case jumps the extractor and then I must push the fired case out, with a rod. And they are not hot loads.. So I thought maybe the Sako style would work better.
Maybe I just need to get a replacement extractor from Howa and put a new one in, if they are basically the same.. How's that ? Bill K

I don't have a Howa, but do have an AR-15. I did have some 'slip over' extraction issues in the past, but that was cured by putting a new spring on the extractor. It took maybe 10 minutes and a couple of bucks for the spring, and it has been working fine ever since. Hope that info helps.

Thanks for the info and help guys. I will try a couple of these suggestions, prior to full replacement. Bill K

Bill:

Get your good glass out and inspect the grip edge.
Might be it's just rounded off a bit and can be dressed
down enough to catch 'em. IF that happens just once in
awhile, might not be too bad.
Try a dremel grinding stone IF you're steady enough.

Luck with it!

Hi Bill,

I have a Sako 85 made into a 6x45. From the factory the extractor was poor then with use went to useless (this is also due to the bolt design) anyway, I spent some time filing the extractor and testing it to get it to work ok.

Took the bolt apart and gave it a good cleaning. It did have some gunk in and around the inner parts. Did also Dremel the groove in the Extractor very slightly and will give it a go, with fired ammo. Using brass, here on the bench seems to be working fine. Thanks again folks. Bill K
