Lead is still legal for target shooting and plinking at objects, as long as they are not a live animal, either game or non-game as listed in the California regulations.
Non-lead will be required on all animals/game after July-2019. It is already not legal to use on state property/game refuges and for waterfowl and some other game birds. You have to check the regulations so you know which and where.
After all, we must save the condors and other raptors that they say are dying from ingesting lead on game lost or gut piles, where traces of lead could be left behind by the hunters bullet.. Ya right
More Condors have died with lead poisoning since the lead free ban went into effect in their home range, and some say it is due to them starving and eating the old lead paint off of closed government bases and site's abandoned buildings. More than likely the truth, but our states anti-hunt/gun commission is on a mission and it is not good for hunters.

As to the question of being checked, I have not yet, while out shooting, but they say the wardens will be carrying some equipment to check for lead in bullets of hunters hunting game animals of any type, is need be. Time will tell.
