I have found that the 17 V-max kills Groundhogs better than the 20gr xtp at far greater distances than I really should be shooting them too. I keep reading that the 17 HMR is too small for this and for that, but around here it kills everything we shoot at just fine. Maybe VA got all the good ammo.

I am a fan of the 17 grain TNT. Penetrates as good as the 20 grain and expands about like the 17 VMax, just deeper in. Seems to be the perfect combo on larger bodied critters, but badgers and large ground hogs are going to get back down the hole unless shot in the head. Better option for shooting with lots of neighbors is a 22 Hornet with 40 grain Vmax or Blitzking. No louder than the 17 HMR, in fact I find the noise doesn't carry as far, and a LOT more woompability factor for larger game.

Haven't tried the 17gr. HP's, Dean - might attempt to round some up for a test. Have you chronographed them?
